PICKETS AND POLICE milled around at the gate to the Chemical Plant at Uniroyal in Naugatuck after hearing after police got word of a meeting inside and sent a large group of officers to the area. Nothing happened, and non-union employes entered the plant. The company, meanwhile, was proceeding with plans to seek an injunction to mass picketing at the Chemical Plant by Local 218, United Rubber Workers, similar to the one at the Footwear Plant regarding Local 48. A meeting was held this morning in Waterbury Superior Court with Judge Leo V. Gaffney – Staff Photo.
Judge Gaffney commended the Naugatuck police for their handling of the picket line situation. He said the police were forced to make the arrests and were to be commended for their actions. He said he hoped the order for a show cause hearing would act as a ‘restraining measure’ and help to restore the good will between the company and Local 218. Rzezuski said he was a veteran of combat and ‘had been shot up a few times’ himself. ‘I certainly don’t want any trouble,’ he said. He said he could guarantee that not one thing had been shipped from the Chemical Division over the past few days.
Judge Gaffney on May 9 issued an order for a show cause hearing against Local 48 of the United Rubber Workers in connection with the picketing at the Footwear Division, also in Naugatuck, but a hearing has never been held. It has been continued twice since then. ‘If the same effect holds true with the injunction order against Local 218 at the Chemical Plant, the picketing will be continued as long as the picketing remains peaceful,’ Judge Gaffney said.
Seeks Same Effect
He said he hopes the same order against Local 48 at the Footwear Plant will have a similar effect on picketing activities at the Chemical Plant. But Rzezuski said the company had been on strike for five weeks. Naugatuck Police Chief Frank Mariano and Capt. Joseph Marinelli were called to testify in today’s session but were not allowed to do so. A company official was quick to (Thursday’s) point to say the case was continued until the next session. Management personnel was ‘not needed’ and ‘were not called.’ Production of some 500 items necessary to the Vietnam effort, the official said.
Management today was very busy, according to a Bridgeport company attorney, in assisting the U.S. Defense Department that the production was ‘partially’ for the defense effort for parts of the country, and he gave no one detail ‘on the use of the items or the parts. The judge said he would take the picket line difficulty under advisement.
