96 People Honored for Service

Ninety six people were recently honored for their twenty five years or more service with the Uniroyal Chemical division.

Thirty four employees were made new members of the Twenty Five Years Service Club; forty were made members of the Thirty Years Service group; seventeen joined the Thirty Five Years group; three were honored for their Forty Years Service; and two were named to the Forty-Five Years group: Anthony G. Giancarlo and Edwin A. Saunders.

Three Honored for Forty Years Service

Three employees, George Baktis, Anthony Brazicki and Edward Svendsen received LeCoultre Perpetual Motion clocks for their forty years of service.

This year’s new members brings the total of Chemical Division personnel in the Twenty Five Years Service Club to about 700 people out of a total of 1120 employees. Sixty per-

cent of the people in the Chemical division now have twenty five or more years of service.

Plant Receives Safety Award for Second Successive Year

The Rubber and Plastics Section of the National Safety Council presented the Naugatuck Chemical plant with a Safety Award for a 10% reduction in its injury rate during 1977. Over 350 Companies participate in the National Safety Council Program.

According to the figures submitted to the U.S. Government by the Corporate Safety Dept. the plant’s reduction in accidents was 50% in 1977 compared to the Company’s average of 25%.

Incidence Rate Drops

The plant’s Incidence Rate— the number of injuries that occurred during the year—was 2.81 for 1977 compared to 3.88 in 1976 a significant improvement in safety performance.

The Severity Rate—the seriousness of the injury—increased from 21.75 to 39.44 in 1977. This was attributable to two Chargeable accidents in which the employees suffered lengthy recovery periods and were unable to perform their work responsibilities.

A total of 506 days was lost in 1977 compared to 247 in 1976.

1978 Performance

For the first six months of 1978 the plant’s safety record is 8 accidents compared to a total of 19 accidents for the same period in 1977, a good improvement in safety performance.


New Managers Named

Robert L. Swallow has been named General Manager of Agricultural Chemicals.

He will be responsible for both the domestic and worldwide Marketing and Research and Development activities of these products.

Vincent A. Calarco has been appointed General Manager of Chemicals and Polymers for the Chemical Division.

He will be responsible for the strategic and operational marketing of domestic chemicals and polymers’ business.

Donald L. Nevins, Jr. has been named Divisional Controller for Uniroyal Chemical. Mr. Nevins joined Uniroyal in February, 1976 and has served as Director, Internal Audit since that date.

Lawrence J. Czechowicz has been appointed Director of Personnel for the Uniroyal Chemical division.

In his new assignment, he will direct the Division’s personnel management, organization and planning; personnel development; compensation Manage-

Plant Positions Filled

Madelyn Malone has been named Traffic Supervisor for the Naugatuck Chemical Plant, responsible for the administration of all transportation services for the location.

Robert VanAllen has been promoted to the position of Engineering Associate and will be a member of the Technical Dept.

Robert J. Rogoz has been appointed Controller for the Naugatuck Chemical plant. He will be responsible for all financial analysis and forecasting for the plant.

Water M. Frankenberger has been appointed Chief Methods Engineer for the Naugatuck Chemical plant and will be responsible for managing the personnel and activities of the Methods Engineering Dept.

Terri Yachtis has been appointed Purchasing Agent for the Naugatuck Chemical Plant.

Salzman Discusses New Attitude

Top level plans for the future of the Company and the Division were revealed to members of the Uniroyal Chemical Management Club recently in an address delivered by Sheldon R. Salzman, President of Uniroyal Chemical.

Mr. Salzman opened by asserting we are now in a period of dynamic change and stimulus, generating changes in marketing direction and emphasis, and a restructuring of top-management positions.

One positive move was the elimination of unprofitable product lines—three from Naugatuck. Cited as examples were the Reclaim Rubber operation; the Synthetic Rubber Plant; and the Lotol and Dispersite businesses. Other operations which no longer met the company’s long term marketing objectives were sold.

These decisions not only reversed these loss situations, but the company was then able to provide money for growth in

New Naugard PANA Made

Naugard® PANA, (Phenyl-Alpha-Naphthylamine) was first produced at the Chemical plant in 1966.

Because of its low profit, only 60,000 lbs. were made and it was discontinued.

In 1976 DuPont announced that it was discontinuing the manufacture of PANA. Since it held a large share of the market, the demand for a new supplier was evident. Because the Naugatuck Chemical plant had the technology, equipment and capacity for production, plans were made to supply the chemical to the market.

Production Started in September

Production started last September in Bldg. 28 utilizing one of the JZF autoclave-still systems.

Approximately 90,000 lbs. of PANA have now been produced and numerous

Safety Award Received

for 20% Accident Reduction in 1976

The Council presented the 20% Accident Reduction Award to the plant for “the excellent safety improvement achieved during 1976.” The 1977 safety goal is a further 10% reduction in injuries. World Meets in EMIC

The first worldwide Sales and Materials Flow meeting was held in the EMIC Bldg. Attending the session were clockwise: P. Haas, F. Johns, R. Mazzeo, E. Geise, Vice President of International Operations, T. McMahon, T. Griffiths, J. Hunt, W. Cook, E. Barrows, R. Kraynick, R. Hall, J. Pheasant, J. Ford and W. Leukhardt.

The world came together in EMIC when the first Uniroyal Chemical International Sales and Material Flow meeting was held there. The meeting was organized to solidify the activities of the worldwide Sales and Material Flow groups.

The Overseas Marketing Group is part of the Chemical Division’s International Operations and is headed by Edward Geise, Vice President. All of the Division’s operations outside of the U.S.A. make up the International Group: Sales, Production and Research and Development and provide a strong, coordinated worldwide marketing activity.

The direct sales activities are centered in Belgium, Italy, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Australia, Venezuela, Argentina, and Brazil. From these international offices, customers are served by technically competent and customer-oriented agents and distributors. These activities (except for the European area and Brazil) are coordinated from the Headquarters office in EMIC by Walter Cook, Philip Haas, Russell Mazzeo, Robert Kraynick, Francis Johns, Edward Barrows, Denise Dovell, Mary Okoski and Gill Boyle.

Nearly 10% of the 1977 estimated Division sales of Naugatuck Rubber Chemicals, Polymers, and Plastics will be products manufactured at the Naugatuck plant.


$1228 for Ideas

$1228.00 in checks is handed out by Charles Ferguson, Chemical Maintenance Foreman, for Ideas submitted by members of the department. Emil Rehel (left) and Raymond Kubick (right) received a total of $716.00. Cirno LoBalbo, (second left) and Ted Hubbell (third left) received $512.00 for their Idea.

Four members of the Chemical Maintenance Dept. received $1228.00, for their Ideas on reducing costs in the plant.

The team of Raymond Kubick and Emil Rehel received a total of $716.00 for their idea to reuse the stainless steel hoses in the manufacture of MDI. They recommended that the solid matter that accumulated in the hoses during manufacture be burned out and the hoses reused. The idea will result in annual savings of $5340.00 for the plant.

Ted Hubbell and Cirno LoBalbo, also of the Chemical Maintenance Department, were awarded $512.80 for their suggestion on improving the bagging of Roylar® polyurethane elastomers in Bldg. 80. The Idea will result in savings of $4930.00 per year for the plant.

The combined annual savings of the two Ideas amounts to $10,270.


322 Pints Donated

Over 300 pints of blood have been donated by Uniroyal Chemical employees in the two Bloodmobiles sponsored by the plant this past year. At the most recent visit employees contributed 171 pints of blood.

Contributes 11 Gallons

The Bloodmobile marked a special occasion for Edmund Nole, a Materials Flow Supervisor in EMIC who contributed his 11th gallon of blood. Nole has contributed blood four times a year for twenty-two consecutive years.

Chemicals, Rubber and Plastics

The Chemicals, Rubber and Plastics sales were $92 million, compared with $80 million in the same period a year ago. For the three quarters, sales were $298 million, up from $251 million in the first nine months of 1976.

Increased sales were recorded in rubber chemicals—the antiozonants and antioxidants that are used extensively in the rubber and plastics industry. Also, Royalene® thermoplastic rubber, which has wide application in automotive uses, had increased sales in the quarter.

Seven Achieve 40 Years Service

111 Uniroyal Chemical employees were recently honored for their long service with the Division.

Thirty-three of the Group were made new members of the Uniroyal Chemical Twenty Five Years Service Club. Thirty-nine members were advanced to the Thirty Year group; and twenty eight received Thirty Five year service pins.

Dividend Declared

The Company declared a dividend of 12½¢ a share on the Company’s common stock. It was payable on June 25 to stockholders of record on May 23.

It also declared a dividend of $2.00 a share on the preferred stock which was payable on June 25th to stockholders of record on May 23rd.

“Gold Shoe” Given

Richard Guest, a Chemical Production Operator in Bldg. 79, received the Gold Shoe award which is presented to employees of industrial plants for their practice of safety.

Guest was guiding a transtacker in the Aminox building when his foot was pinned against it and a loaded pallet. The weight of the transtacker would probably have crushed or broken all of the bones in his right foot. Fortunately he was wearing safety shoes which protected the foot against a permanent and disabling injury.

This was one of the “unexpected happenings” that require constant awareness and attention in order to avoid such types of accidents.


Silver Dollars Awarded Monthly

2049 “silver dollars” have been distributed to employees since January as part of the Safety Incentive Program. Departments are divided into Groups of 10 employees. If one employee in the Group suffers a Reportable Injury without any days lost from work, only members of the Group lose the silver dollar. The entire Department is disqualified if it is a Disabling injury that causes the employee to lose one or more days of work. Top Bloodmobile Goal

151 pints of blood were donated to the recent Red Cross Bloodmobile sponsored by the Uniroyal Chemical plant for the twenty-sixth year. The goal for this year’s Bloodmobile, which had been postponed until February, was 140 pints. 111 employees contributed and twenty were deferred for medical reasons. Forty of the donors were walk-ins.

Chemical employees have now contributed 3326 pints of blood to the Red Cross Bloodmobile.

For this visit Bldg. 61 had the highest percent of donors and EMIC had the highest number.

Harold Werner received a 5 gallon pin; Joseph Wojtczak, a 4 gallon pin; and Sandra Alfonso, a 2 gallon pin.

One gallon pins were awarded to John Ciaccio, Robert Shortt, and John Tierney.

The Chemical Production operators who staff the FOC Bldg. are Carl DeMatteo, Francis Dingle, Ronald Moffat, Robert Roland, James Umbro, and Nelson Whidbee. Foreman of the Bldg. is Robert E. Cronin and Earl Roller is Area Foreman.

Project Manager for the new plant start-up was William Yee.

Other personnel from Chemical Production involved in the start-up were Process Engineers John Gilbert and Andrew Clock. From Plant Engineering were James Garrigan, Victor Anderson, John Hoey, Dave Nelson, Lawrence Bogen and Claude Travers.

Chemical Maintenance personnel assigned to the project were George Holmes, Philip Hardt and Walter Campbell.

Looking Back…

Looking Ahead…

The end is near for 1976 and it is a time for looking backwards and reviewing where we’ve been as well as looking ahead anticipating a brand new year—and fresh start.

For the Naugatuck plant, 1976 was a year of excitement, turmoil, sadness and progress. There was, for many, the sadness of seeing the Reclaim plant being torn down. It represented a symbol of Naugatuck Chemical and was where many people gave a better part of their lives. There was also sadness, as we saw many of our friends leave, through retirement, and although we wish them well we will miss them. Certainly the strike, the longest in the history of Uniroyal Chemical, caused more excitement and 1976 will unfortunately be remembered by most of us for this more than anything else.

But progress was evident too, the new F.O.C. building was being completed and we look toward the start-up with excitement and anticipation.

This is also a time in the year when all of us find that the pace slows a little and we find that we remember the pleasant things of our lives and draw our families and friends closer to us.

So I would like to extend to all of you at Naugatuck Chemical my personal and warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.


Plant Doctor Named

Dr. Richard Biondi, right, is welcomed to Naugatuck Chemical as the new plant physician by Robert Shortt, Safety Manager.

Dr. Richard Biondi has been named plant physician for the Naugatuck Chemical location. Dr. Biondi recently completed a Pulmonary Fellowship at St. Mary’s Hospital after serving two years with the U.S. Army in Seoul, Korea, and Fort Belvoir, Virginia as an Internist and Pulmonary Consultant.

He interned at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City and completed two years of residency for internal medicine at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn.

He attended the Creighton University School of Medicine. A native of New York City, he presently resides in Southbury with his wife, Linda, and son.


$6,828,825 Paid Out for Group Life Insurance

In the policy year ending March 31, 1976, the Company paid a total of $6,828,825 for Group Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance according to W. O. Kohnke, Manager of Insured Employee Benefits.

Most employees and retirees in the United States are insured under this policy. The total insurance in force exceeds one billion dollars.


19 Receive CPR Certificates

The first CardioPulmonary Resuscitation course recently ended with 19 employees from most all departments at the Naugatuck location receiving Certificates. The course consisted of three sessions, 3 hours each and a written examination upon completion.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also known as CPR, is a combination of artificial respiration and artificial circulation, which should be started immediately as an emergency procedure when cardiac arrest occurs. It has been used successfully on several occasions in the plant when employees suffered heart attacks at work. It is extremely important to give the treatment immediately to prevent damage to the brain. If the brain

Worker Saved by J. Mello

John Mello of the Plant Protection department saved an employee of the Waterbury Wrecking Co. who was knocked unconscious by a section of I-beams that struck him on the head when the steel sling broke. The worker fell on top of the Holoflite with half of his body hanging over its side. Mello, who was working nearby, grabbed his waist and prevented his fall 40 feet to the ground between a three foot space.

Averts Serious Injury

Mello’s action probably saved the man from a critical injury. He suffered a deep gash in his head that required 9 sutures to close. Fortunately he was wearing a hard hat which saved him from a fractured skull or a fatality.

The Wrecking Co. is dismantling and demolishing the Reclaim Production unit which was closed in November 1975.

Wintsch Named IR Manager

H. Frederick Wintsch has been named Industrial Relations Manager for the Naugatuck plant of Uniroyal Chemical, it was announced by James Cronin, Factory Manager. He succeeds Jesse Crim, who was appointed Director of Personnel Management and Training for the Chemical division.

Prior to his new assignment he served as Labor Relations Manager since 1968. Wintsch joined the Naugatuck Chemical plant in 1963 as a member of the

Plant Tops 1,000,000 Manhours Without a Lost Time Accident for Second Time in 1973

For the second time in a year employees worked 1,000,000 man-hours without a Lost Time Accident. This notable record commenced on September 30, 1973, and the goal was reached on January 20, 1974.

Dividend Declared

Uniroyal declared a quarterly dividend of 17½ cents a share on the Company’s common stock payable March 25 to stockholders of record February 25.

The Company also declared two dividends of $2 each on its preferred stock: one to be paid March 25 to stockholders of record February 25 and the other payable June 25 to stockholders of record May 20.

Equality Policy Affirmed

Jesse Crim, Industrial Relations Manager, is Compliance Officer and has the responsibility for implementing this policy; monitoring the Uniroyal Chemical Affirmative Action Compliance Program; and reporting to management the program’s progress.

Trades Courses Offered

A new Trades Program will be offered in cooperation with the Kaynor Technical School in Waterbury. The two year program, scheduled in the fall, is voluntary and open to all Naugatuck Chemical employees.

Courses offered will consist of Basic Mathematics, Blueprint Reading, Plumbing, Mechanics and Electricity and will be held one night a week for three hours for 33 sessions.

Successful completion of the program, as judged by the Kaynor Tech instructors, will allow graduates to qualify for second class Piper, Mechanic, and Electrician’s openings when available and in accordance with contractual requirements of seniority and qualifications.

No Cost To Employee

Tuition and textbook costs will be paid by the plant. The (Cont’d on page 2)


Unions Ratify 3 Year Contract

The master labor agreement and other agreements covering wages, pensions, insurance, severance pay, and supplemental unemployment benefits, negotiated by Uniroyal and the United Rubber Workers, have been subsequently ratified by the Union. All improved agreements are now in effect with the exception of the master labor agreement which will become effective when local supplemental agreements are negotiated and signed.

The new agreements, covering a 3 year period, were signed on June 11, 1973 after three months of negotiations in Dayton, Ohio.

The contracts provide for wage increases over the 3 year period and improvements in pensions, life insurance, sickness and accident insurance, medical insurance, and supplemental unemployment insurance.

They also include improvements in certain of these areas as they apply to retired employees.

Improvements in the general wage scale were effective on July 2, 1973.

Monthly Pension Increases

The monthly pension allowance was improved. The improvements are progressive over the 3 year period. By 1975, the monthly amount will be computed on the basis of $10.00 per month for every year of service. Disability pensions will be on a double monthly allowance, increasing to $20.00 per month per year of service by 1975.

Early Retirement

The new pension plan provides that an employee with 30 years’ service at and after age 55 can retire at his own option on an unreduced pension amount. For those employees exercising this option in 1974 and thereafter, the plan provides a supplemental allowance until age 65.

SUB Benefits

The supplemental unemployment benefits plan was modified. The company will increase its contribution to the SUB fund. By 1975, contributions will be at $0.10 per hour worked level and maximum funding will be at $750 per employee covered by the plan.

Life Insurance

Life insurance has been increased from $8500 to $9500

Frequency Rate Is 8.93 For 6 Months

It started on March 11 and was reached on June 26, one million manhours worked without a lost time accident. This achievement reflects a greatly improved safety performance over 1972 and has resulted in a 50% reduction in accidents in the plant.

Carpet Council Honors Dr. Sterrett

The Carpet Compounders’ Council honored the late Dr. Robert Sterrett for his outstanding contributions to the carpet and rug industry and to the rubber and latex industry with a resolution at the Council’s recent conference.

At the time of his death on April 29, 1973, Dr. Sterrett was the Southeast Regional Manager of sales for Uniroyal Chemical in Dalton, Georgia. He pioneered and developed some of the first SBR synthetic latexes for the carpet industry and was a prime mover in the use of latex as a backsizing for carpets.


Sales Top Billion$ For First 6 Months

Sales and earnings hit record levels for the first half and second quarter of 1973.

Sales totaled $1,056,737,000 which was the first time in the company’s history that they exceeded one billion dollars for a half year. This represents a gain of 15.8% over the record of $912,648,000 set in 1972.

Net income for the half was $31,986,000, a gain of 13.7%.

2nd Quarter Record Set

Sales for the second quarter were $561,310,000, a gain of 15.8%, and net income was $18,560,000, a gain of 10.5%.

Profits would have been higher except for work stoppages during the second quarter and raw material price increases, particularly for natural rubber and energy costs, which the company has not been able to offset through price increases because of government restrictions. There has also been some softening of recovery in foreign markets for tires.

Tire Sales Rising

The performance of the steel belted radial ply tire has been outstanding, resulting in rising sales and expanded dealer distribution facilities.

Keds footwear have also shown sharp increases in sales and improving profitability. There is a continued improvement in the company’s chemical operations. Sales of Naugahyde were reported at record levels.

Naugatuck Plant Situation

Increased costs for fuel oil, electricity, and water, the $3,000,000 liquid waste pretreatment plant, higher transportation costs, new equipment, and higher production costs have affected the earnings of all production units at the Naugatuck plant.

Very few of these higher operating costs have been offset by price increases for the plant’s products.


Savings Bond Drive Ends

Over 500 employees now purchase U.S. Savings Bonds through the payroll deduction plan.

In the recent plantwide drive ten employees signed for the purchase of the bonds and twenty increased their deductions.

The 5½% guaranteed interest and the tax benefits make U.S. Savings Bonds an attractive savings plan for building a college education fund for children and also a retirement fund.

SAFETY: Our Monday morning Safety meetings are continuing and appear to be working successfully. This month Bob Breton has a slide presentation on drum handling which is quite appropriate.

We had one serious accident since our last column when an operator cut his finger on a sharp edge and it had to be stitched.

Not only are our Lost Time and Serious Accidents down, but hospital calls are also decreasing. This is a good sign in that we are having less accidents overall. Keep up the good work especially during the Summer when long hours and heat fatigue make us susceptible to accidents.

PRODUCTION: Business continues to run heavy. Tonox, Sunproofs, Aminox-Betanox and Omite are in tight supply, and have in general been running seven days. Next year’s Omite business is very optimistic and we plan to run 6 days for the rest of this year and next year.

We have not run as smoothly these past three months as the first three months of the year. Mechanical breakdowns and raw material shortages have cost us.

QUALITY: Our quality slipped a bit when 31,000 pounds of Naugawhite and a tankcar of Polygard were rejected. The off-spec inventory is still high—still around 200,000 pounds. That’s a lot of money to tie up in rejected material.

73 BUILDING EXPANSION: One of the high cost areas is finishing. In order to improve our business position, we have invested several hundred thousand dollars in 73 Building. Our new Littleford-Lodige mixer is on stream and producing excellent quality material. Rates are still low while operators are being trained. The Octamine crushing system has been installed and is now being shaken down. The quick change mill system won’t be ready until August.

TIDBITS: Joe Bucciaglia has been presented an Award of Merit for Outstanding Dancing Ability by the Harold J. Schwartz School of Dancing.

“There’s no justice in this world for women” according to Kay Dowling. The men on the first floor of Bldg. 7 have air conditioning; but on the second floor there’s only a 1910 fan.


Inflation Proof Social Security

A recent change in the law has made social security inflation-proof. Increases in benefits will now be tied directly to increases in the cost of living. Each year, beginning in 1974, living costs will be compared with those for the year before. If living costs have increased 3% or more and a general social security benefit increase has not been enacted, benefits will be increased by the same percentage the following January.

The first automatic increase in benefits could be for January 1975.

Social security now pays over $4 billion dollars a month in retirement, disability, and survivors benefits to over 28 million people.


Pratt Named To Safety Group

Denise Pratt, an Analyst in Research and Development, was named as a permanent member to the Union-Management Safety Committee by Joseph Rzeszutek, President of URW Local 218.

The Committee was organized to study the causes of accidents in the plant and to recommend preventive measures to avoid injuries to employees.

It recently proposed stricter compliance with the plant’s safety regulations by outside truck drivers, contractors and visitors, and particularly the 10 mile speed limit in congested plant areas.

The group meets regularly once a month with two of the four Union members on the Committee rotating, and all Management members permanent.

Know Your Products:

Retarders; Blowing Agents; Waxes

by Dr. Bob Brown

Besides the diverse line of accelerators, antioxidants and antiozontants manufactured in Chemical Production, the plant makes a number of specialty chemicals: Retarders, Process Stiffeners, Bonding Agents, Waxes and Blowing Agents.

The Retarders, ESEN and Retarder J, slow down the vulcanization of the rubber during processing. This may sound like driving a car with your foot on the brake, but when a customer is trying to mix a batch of rubber on a mill and it starts to vulcanize (harden) before he can finish processing it, he must rely on a Retarder to slow down the vulcanization.

Process Stiffener 710 is also used as a processing aid. Rubber is usually easier to handle when it is fairly soft, but some types of rubber soften so much, that they almost seem to be turning into a liquid during the processing. Stiffener 710 gives these rubbers the necessary hardness and firmness to stay sufficiently solid so they can be worked on the mill.

The Sunproof® Waxes are used along with Flexzone® antiozontants to reduce the cracking of tire sidewalls and treads. The Waxes are mixed with the rubber on the mill and then migrate to the surface of the rubber to form a protective film against atmospheric cracking.


Plant Gets Red Cross Award

The Naugatuck Red Cross awarded Uniroyal Chemical a Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding cooperation with the Connecticut Red Cross Blood Program.

In the annual Bloodmobile sponsored by the plant Chemical and Footwear employees and walk-ins donated 214 pints of blood. Another 25 were deferred.

During the year the Naugatuck Red Cross collected 1038 pints of blood. Connecticut is one of the few states where the blood itself is free.

Organized by the Safety Dept. the successful drive was carried out by Bob Shortt, Sal Aloise, Adeline Farrar R.N., and Ann McAllister R.N.

Enamait Improved

Bob Enamait has been transferred from the intensive care unit of St. Mary’s Hospital and officially removed from the danger list.

He is now in a private room and attended by private duty nurses around the clock. He is still on a circular motorized bed and receiving physical therapy. His response to treatment is good.


Safety Sign Installed

The first Employee Safety Record sign has been installed at Main Gate. Flashing lights indicate safety record for 24 hour period.

Three new Employee Safety Record signs will be installed to keep employees posted on the plant’s safety record for this year as compared with 1970.

Flashing lights will indicate the 24 hour safety record of employees: the red signifies a Lost Time accident; yellow, a Serious Injury; and the green will indicate that employees have worked safely for a 24 hour period.

The first of the three signs has been installed at the Main entrance; the others will be constructed at the Tire Gate and the Synthetic plant.

The signs are another step in the Safety departments continuing program to improve safety awareness among employees.

FROM THE FACTORY MANAGER

DEAR FELLOW EMPLOYEE:

The past month or so I have been busy reviewing plans for our 1971 operating budget. If I were to share those costs in detail with you, I’m sure you would be discouraged by the ever-increasing cost of doing business.

Looking beyond the wage and benefit increases granted in the recently completed master contract negotiations, giving consideration to continued merit recognition of salaried personnel and improved salary employee benefits, we face added costs in terms of raw materials, supplies and utilities.

For example, the electric company has asked the Public Utilities Commission to grant a 10% rate hike. The water company has requested the Commission for approval to increase its rates by 25%. Regulations coming into effect in 1971 on the use of low sulfur fuel point to record oil prices for operating our boilers. Increased spending for pollution abatement will add to an already burdened budget.

Realizing that increased costs cannot be merely passed along to the customer, because in reality its the value of the product to the customer that sets its price in the market place, it is apparent that we can’t meet 1971 costs with old-fashioned ideas and methods.

We need new imagination and creativity directed toward greater productivity, higher quality, and, in general, excellence and efficiency in every phase of our work. We need the individual and group dedication to face these challenges as “our jobs”, not as “this is your job, that’s my job”. As I see it, everyone of us is on the first team, there is no “second string”, it’s up to all of us to “really put out” all of the time.

JAROY Returns 10% On $1.00

Jaroy, Inc., Uniroyal Chemical’s sponsored Junior Achievement Company completed a highly successful year. The company returned a 10 cent dividend to all stockholders after paying taxes, salaries, wages, raw materials’ cost, office rent and costs for manufacturing equipment.

The company completed its operations last month and sent the dividend plus the original $1 stock purchase to each of its stockholders, a 10% return on their investment. Included in the stockholder’s report were the board of directors, a liquidation report, an organization chart, a sales report and an operations and balance statement. Sales for the firm amounted to $586.

At the Junior Achievement annual dinner, Jaroy was voted runner-up “Company of the year.” Mary Kevit, the secretary of Jaroy, was voted “Secretary of the year”; and June Murray was voted runner-up for “Sales Vice President of the year.” These awards represented a distinctive honor since the competition included officers from 35 other companies in the Naugatuck–Waterbury area.

Jaroy’s officers, who led the firm to a successful year consisted of a woman management team, juniors and seniors at Naugatuck High School.

Advisors to Jaroy, Inc. were Jim Brown and Ted Lainas.

Computers at EMIC are now helping us to select the best way to ship our products to improve customer service by prompt delivery of their orders.

The new computerized system determines the cost of the shipment; pays the freight charges to conform with ICC regulatons; and reduces transportation costs. ICC rules require payment of freight bills within 4 days if shipped by rail, and 7 days if shipped by truck.

On outbound freight, the computers type the hundreds of checks previously handled individually by the accounts payable department.

Each month the “think” machines provide vital information to the sales, accounting and traffic departments on customers’ purchases, products sold, and the pounds ordered. The system also gives a monthly and a year-to-date record of the tonnage and revenue of each carrier. The computers also catch duplicate payments of freight charges.

Feeding accurate statistics to the computer is essential to schedule shipments promptly and selection of the proper carrier.

Responsible for coding the bills of lading are Al Juliano and Jim Sadik. George Holzer, recently transferred from the plant’s traffic department to EMIC feeds the coded cards into the computer which types the freight payments and memorizes the information for future use.

Use of the computers is another step forward to improve customer service and to reduce shipping costs to stay competitive in the chemical market.

Almost everyone knows some of Parkinson’s Laws, including “expenses always rise to meet income.”

There is also Murphy’s Law which states “if anything can go wrong–it will.”

Thanksgiving And Us…

Thanksgiving Day seems to have lost much of its significance. Originally it was set aside as a special day of prayer. Today, it is looked upon more as a four day weekend and three games of football on TV.

The people who first came to New England lived a life of far greater poverty than some of the people living in Appalachia today. Their Thanksgiving was one of survival.

By their unity of purpose, and their concern for each other, they laid the groundwork for the many benefits we enjoy in our present society.

When you think ot our progress, no other group of people has achieved such high standards of living.

We at the Chemical Plant, in particular, have much to be thankful for. With unemployment as high as 12-20% in some towns, we have been able to maintain a steady level of employment. We have some of the finest wages and benefits in industry. All of us have great concern for the safety, health, and welfare of each other and a positive attitude toward the improvement of the environment.

I think you will agree with me that these are important things in our lives.

If each one of us does his full share, we will continue to reap the rewards of our efforts and assure, even increase, the many good things we now enjoy for ourselves and our families.

Eleven Receive MS Degrees

Eleven employees received their M.S. degrees in June under the Uniroyal Tuition Aid program: Jim Garrigan, Bill Broden, Terry Mo, and John Gilbert received degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Hartford; Joe Schoen, Temple University; Pete Byra, John Swanson, and Lou Kaiser, University of Hartford; Paul Hinckley, Southern Connecticut; Bob Farrell, University of Connecticut; and Marvin Cramer, University of Bridgeport.

$31,346 in Payments

Tuition Aid during the academic year, Sept. 1, 1970 to Aug. 31, 1971 totaled $31,469 in reimbursements to 82 employees.

12 employees are attending job related courses; 20 are working toward a college degree; and 50 are pursuing postgraduate studies.

Over the past 6 years 36 employees have received degrees under the program with Uniroyal’s reimbursements amounting to $125,022.

The Tuition Aid Program is available to all full-time employees. The Company reimburses you for the full tuition cost and fees for two courses per semester. The courses must be related to your present job or will be of value, as determined by the Company, in future promotional areas. Reimbursement is made only upon successful completion of the course.

Disaster Plan Tested

Deluge water fog flooded Hortonspheres to control simulated butadiene leak

The 66 Alarm was a simulated butadiene leak in the Synthetic plant Hortonspheres. The leaking vapor was flooded and controlled with water fog from the top and sides of the spheres. According to Harry Francolini who was in charge of the Control Center, “we found a few bugs in the Plan but on the whole it went quite well.” The bugs are being ironed out to make the Plan more effective.

The test was the culmination of weeklong demonstrations during Fire Prevention Week.

It was a quiet Friday afternoon—just a few more hours to the weekend—when at 1 P.M., Alarm “66” sounded 4 times over the plant’s fire alarm system. A quick call to the Watchman in Bldg. 84 and the Disaster Plan was in operation.

Work stopped and designated emergency personnel reported to the Control Center for instructions and others assumed their plant emergency responsibilities to prepare for a shutdown and evacuation of the plant.

Chemical Team Loses Playoffs

The Chemical Royals with a 24-8 won-lost record, made the League’s 4 team playoffs. In the best out of 3 championship playoff games, they lost to Fortin’s Restaurant.

Batting the Royals to their victorious season were Pete Byra 545; John Johnson 511; Vin Rooney 495.

Eric Johnson and Al Zimmerman provided the team’s slugging power with “All Star” pitcher, Mike Jasman, doing a superb job on the mound for the Royals.

Other members of the Chemical Royals were Dick Carroll, Tom Casteel, Leon Hartmann, Bill Lawton, John Prior, Dan Shantz, Rudy Valente, and Al Zonas.


Salesmen Review Sales

District 11 salesmen met to review their sales record for the first nine months of 1971.

In the first 9 months, the District achieved 108% of its budget and hopes to hit 110% in the 4th quarter.

An important factor in helping them sell more was an improved “service image” among customers. They pointed out at the meeting that customer demand for good service is a major problem in their contact with customers. If you can’t deliver the product when the customer needs it, he simply buys it from a competitor.

Crim Named IR Manager

Mitchinson, Melore Receive New Posts

Jesse Crim was named Industrial Relations Manager for the Naugatuck Chemical plant, effective June 1. He succeeds Ron Mitchinson who has accepted a position in the Corporate Industrial Relations Department in Oxford.

Neil Melore was appointed Industrial Relations Manager for the Painesville, Ohio plant.

Crim served as Industrial Relations Manager in Painesville from 1968-1971. He held the same position in the Santa Ana, Calif., and Washington, Ind. plants.

He joined Uniroyal in 1947; is a veteran of World War II; and a graduate of Purdue University.


Hats, Glasses Required

Profits; Sales Up

Tires; Footwear Improve; Chemical Business Off

Uniroyal, Inc. income increased 10.6% to $10.6 million in the first quarter of 1971 compared with $9.5 million reported for the same period last year.

Sales in the first quarter climbed to a record of $413 million, about an 8% increase over the record $381 million set in 1970.

Uniroyal was the only Company of the “Big Four” rubber companies to report an increase in profits and sales for the first quarter of the year. Goodyear, Firestone, and Goodrich dropped during the quarter.

Phase I Of Liquid Waste Pretreatment Plant Started

Sewerage System Now Being Installed

A new sanitary sewerage system was installed in the Chemical yard to carry liquid discharges to main sewers of the Chemical plant system.

The construction of Phase I of the new $3,000,000 Liquid Waste Pretreatment Plant is now in progress.

Phase I includes the installation of new sanitary sewers in the Reclaim, Chemical, and Synthetic plant yards. These new sewers will divert the sanitary sewage from the present side streams to the main sewers in order to be ready for transfer into the new pretreatment facilities.

Pretreats For Borough’s Secondary Treatment Plant

The new pretreatment facilities will pretreat the plant’s waste liquids for acceptance into the Borough of Naugatuck’s Secondary Treatment Plant.

Uniroyal Chemical has committed $1,500,000 toward the construction of the Borough’s waste disposal plant, and will pay 60% of the operational costs due to the large volume of the plant’s waste flowing into the Borough’s plant.

50% of Capital Expenditures Allocated to Pollution Control

In 1971, approximately 50% of the plant’s capital expenditures will be spent on pollution control facilities.

A major project currently under study is the elimination of the odors created by the Reclaim operations. By process changes, it is expected that the odors of the Reclaim plant will be controlled.

Waste Control Important

The efficient operation of the waste water treatment facilities depends on everyone’s cooperation in the use of water, prevention of spills, and avoidance of washing chemicals “down the drain.”

Medicine Search Started

A Pharmaceutical Research Program has been initiated to study and screen chemicals for possible medical use. Assisted in the search by outside pharmacology laboratories, the group is interested in developing chemicals which could be made at the Naugatuck plant.

Five Year Goal

The main aim within the next three to five years is to obtain a drug through clinical work and receive approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market it. Research work is presently centered on antiinflammatory drugs for the treatment of arthritis; cardiovascular antihypertensive drugs for high blood pressure and related disorders; and tranquilizer related drugs.

The Chemical Division R & D group consists of Dr. Zaven S. Ariyan, Coordinator of the Program and two Senior Research Chemists, Dr. Constantine I. Courduvelis and Dr. J. Terence O’Brien.

“PEACE ON EARTH TO MEN OF GOOD WILL..”

We pray for Peace but half the world’s people are at war or involved in civil strife. While each side is sure of their cause, the result is still pain and suffering, grief and anguish.

None of us can singly alter the events that are occurring. We can, of course, politically try to express ourselves, but so often the political choice is not one of peace or war, but is more closely related to personalities or domestic problems.

What we can do individually is act as “men of good will” by our charitable deeds and by our daily activities.

We can also pray, and in this period of holy days perhaps all of us can reflect on the suffering around us and stop briefly and pray for peace.


ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYBODY

As some of you may know, I recently suffered an off-the-job accident with an aluminum extension ladder that suddenly developed a will of its own. The result of this momentary carelessness was a cracked bone in my arm and a rather awkward cast.

This accident brought home to me the ease in which a careless or unthinking action could result in an accident.

I hope each of you will continue to be alert towards the unexpected because the accident that happens can be yours.

I sincerely wish you and all the members of your family a Most Happy Christmas and New Year.

Nine employees received $225 for Ideas submitted during the past months. The Ideas centered on improvements in the plant’s operations and reductions in costs.

Employees who received $25 for their suggestions were Anthony Galletta, Robert Guest, Ray Kubick, Hugh Garahan, Paul Blasko, Jr., Jerry Ferguson, Mario Jannetty, George Salokas, and John Wawer.

Letters of Commendation were given to N. Croce, M. Watson, D. Bedard, W. Carreiro, F. Sordi, E. Evans, B. Zukauskas, W. Palmoski, F. Wallace, J. Gandolfo, K. Searles, L. DeLaRosa, and M. Schluensen.

A work area is a good place to look for Ideas.

Start with present work methods in the department. Is there a better, easier way to do the job? Can it be done faster?

If something has been done the same way, every day for ten years, there’s a good possibility that it’s being done wrong and inefficiently.

Ideas Pay Lots of Money

There’s no limit to the amount of money awarded for an Idea. The minimum award for an approved Idea is $25.

Uniroyal Chemical was the first industrial plant in this area to pass the Connecticut State Department of Health inspection and become eligible for a license to operate hospital facilities at the Chemical and Synthetic plants, according to Helen Coburn, R.N., of the Conn. State Dept. of Health.

Requirements Strict

The Laws impose tighter regulations upon the conduct of industrial health facilities in the State.

Besides the strict requirements for the physical facilities, equipment and supplies, the Law requires that a Medical Director, who is a physician licensed in Connecticut, and sufficient registered nurses be available to provide health services to employees. It also requires that at least one individual, who has successfully completed the Advanced Red Cross First Aid course, shall be on duty to provide first aid services whenever a registered nurse or physician is not on duty in the plant.

To date, 39 employees have taken the necessary First Aid courses which involved 20 hours of instruction and demonstrations.


Water Good For Burns

The ancient treatment of plunging burned skin in cold or ice water is still the quickest way to relieve pain. The cold water doesn’t damage the burned skin, but actually helps prevent blistering and aids healing. Continue the treatment until the pain disappears, or apply towels soaked in cold or ice water.

Inside the kitchen, my wife was cooking a Thanksgiving turkey. What almost turned out to be a day of tragedy, was really a day of thanksgiving for us.

When they talk about the unexpected happening, I know better than ever what they mean.


Avoid Danger In The Bedroom

There are two bedroom practices that may save you and your family if your house ever catches fire during the night; 1) keep the bedroom doors closed, 2) have a second method for escaping outside if the normal exits from your bedroom are locked.

13% of the fires in a home start in the bedroom. The bedroom door, which is the normal escape to safety quickly becomes a death trap—when opened—from lung-scorching heat, poisonous fumes, and choking smoke.


Christmas On The River

In a continuing program to improve the physical appearance of the plant, 100 Christmas trees were planted along the Naugatuck river bank near the Reclaim plant. The trees will grow to a height of 12 to 15 ft. and provide a scenic effect on an otherwise drab section of the Reclaim yard. The trees are a small part of a $4,000,000 program to improve plant buildings and facilities.

Once again the United Givers of Naugatuck-Beacon Falls is starting its Fall drive to raise funds for the oncoming year.

As you know, these funds supply finances to a great many very worthwhile activities carried out in Naugatuck, Waterbury and surrounding towns in which we live.

Each year the Factory has contributed collectively a substantial sum of money to help these worthwhile activities.

This year the drive will be conducted with Jim Carroll as Chairman. Jim has formed his Committee and his canvassers will be approaching you shortly for your contribution.

Uniroyal Chemical people have always shown a splendid generosity in their pledges to support the work of these Agencies. Last year, more than two thirds of the Chemical people contributed $20,066, for an average contribution of $20.

Our goal is $21,000. We can achieve this if we give “where you work” and pledge through the payroll deduction plan.

If each person would contribute a minimum one hour’s pay per month, we will readily raise the necessary money to help continue these activities which in some way benefit virtually every employee or some member of his family.

Three Uniroyal Chemical women were named officers in the Uniroyal Girls’ Club at its annual dinner meeting held at the Waverly Inn.

Helen Lavery, EMIC, was named Vice-President; Marjorie Lasky, Research and Development was elected Secretary; and Penny DiBenedictis, EMIC, was made Treasurer.

53 Chemical people belong to the organization which offers a Scholarship each year and participates in the Waterbury Campership Fund to provide summer camp vacations for disadvantaged Waterbury children. The group also holds a number of social activities during the year.

Membership in the Club is open to Uniroyal Chemical women office and clerical employees who are interested in its community and social activities as well as the many recreational functions sponsored by the Club. Twenty-eight U.S. patents were granted in 1970 to Chemical Division employees for inventions in the following commodity groups: rubber chemicals, agricultural chemicals, colloids, synthetic rubber, reclaim rubber, plastics, physical testing, and engineering.

In addition, 173 foreign patents were granted during the year to the Chemical Division.

Important patents were issued for latex to Leland Dannals; for agricultural chemicals to Jack Corkins, an R&D Research man in California; and for Kralastic® ABS to Harry Witt.

Frank O’Shea received the most patents—four. The following inventors each received three; Bogislav von Schmeling, Ron Ames, and Fred Dovell.

College Entrance Examination Board Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test—National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT—NMSQT) in their Junior year. Students should arrange for the tests now with their Principals or Guidance Counsellors. The tests are usually given in early October.

Taking the PSAT—NMSQT tests serves as an automatic application for the scholarship.

$250 to $1500 Awards

The maximum amount given to any student is $1500; the minimum is $250. Each scholarship is a 4 year award.

The amount of the award depends on the family’s financial circumstances and the cost of attending the college selected.

Patents Important

Patents are important to our business as they grant us the exclusive right to the manufacture, use and sale of a product for a 17 year period. During this time, no other company can operate under the claims of our invention, giving us a competitive edge in the market place.

3 Requirements

Before submission of a patent application to the U.S. Patent Office, the Commercial Development Department, patent liaison group, analyzes it critically for three important requirements: 1) novelty; 2) unobviousness; and 3) utility (usefulness). If it passes these criteria, plus a

number of other requirements, the patent is further studied by Uniroyal’s legal counsel, Arthur, Dry and Kalish and a patent application filed.

After an invention is filed with the government, it takes an average of 3 years before a patent grant is made to the inventor (providing, of course, all the numerous rejections by the patent examiners are successfully overcome).

Uniroyal Chemical is one of the most active divisions in the Company in the attainment of patents over the years.


New Law Promotes First Aid

Effective this Fall, a new Connecticut State law requires that at least one person, qualified in Advanced First Aid training be available on every shift when the plant doctor or nurse is not present.

To comply with the new law, courses in the Basics of First Aid and Advanced First Aid were given by John Hardy, a licensed First Aid Instructor for the Red Cross. The two courses involved 20 hours of instruction and demonstration in the techniques of first aid treatment in an emergency.

Attending the courses were: Chemical Production—Sam Blancato, Bob Reich, Ed Ruella, Bob Cronin, Tom Engle, George Allen, and Earl Roller. Mechanical Department—Chet Bulka and Norm Benson. Reclaim Production—Art Nauges, Paul Kazimir, and Arnold Nori. Industrial RelationsBob Shortt, Milt Makoski, and Fred Wintsch.

A second program of courses was recently started with 21 employees participating.

FROM THE FACTORY MANAGER

DEAR FELLOW EMPLOYEE:

The miracle of the twenty five years of continual growth in the U.S. economy since World War II is something all Americans can be proud of. It has enabled us to become leaders in the world’s markets and to raise our standard of living to the point where we are better off than any people in history.

This miracle didn’t just happen. It was brought about by the tremendous productivity of the people of this country. For twenty years every time wages increased, productivity also increased and our standard of living went up.

In the last five years, however, we have seen a change in this pattern. While wages have increased, productivity has not kept pace with them. This has helped cause inflation and has helped drive the cost of our products up.

In turn, foreign manufacturers have maintained their productivity and are now able to sell their goods in our markets at prices lower than ours. We can see this in Japanese electronics; German and Japanese automobiles; and textile and footwear products from all over the world.

On a smaller scale the same thing is happening at our factory. We are in competition with both foreign and domestic producers. They are competing with us for the same customers and markets, oftentimes at lower prices. Besides this our markets are moving away from the northeast and the increasing cost of rail and truck transportation adds to our problem of doing business competitively.

All of us must realize this and remember that the chemicals we produce are in competition with these domestic and foreign manufacturers. We can only sell what we can produce economically. 33 Employees Receive $1355

Mechanical Department Submits Most Ideas

Leo Clark, Mechanical dept. received highest single award, $100.

Ed Bazenas received $140 for 2 Ideas.

Thirty-three employees received $1355 for Ideas submitted on plant improvements, more efficient equipment operation and cost saving suggestions.

The highest single award, $100, went to Leo Clark for his Idea to install guide rods on the Reclaim tire chute to prevent blockups which affected production.

Ed Bazenas received the highest total amount, $140, for two Ideas. One of his Ideas recommended the redesign of the bag compressor in Bldg. 52 which resulted in improved operations and lower maintenance costs.

Mike Marro’s Idea to machine down discarded teflon seats and reuse them as spacers in ball valves reduced material costs and netted him $50.

Idea man for the January-April period was Jerry Ferguson of the Roylar® plant who turned in 4 Ideas which rewarded him with $135.

For 2 Ideas Charlie LoBalbo received $75.

Blood Drive Big Success

239 people offered to donate blood to the annual Bloodmobile sponsored by Uniroyal Chemical on June 10.

During the 5-hour visit at St. Michael’s Parish House, 214 pints were collected and 25 people were deferred. The Bloodmobile exceeded its goal of 150 by 64 pints, making it a “big success” according to the Naugatuck Red Cross Chapter.

137 Chemical employees, retirees, college students and “walk-ins” and 77 Footwear donors donated blood.

Pin Awards

A 3-gallon pin was awarded to Bob Breton, of Chemical Production, for his 24th contribution of blood.

Bob Cranney, R&D; Walt Gniazdowski, R&D; and Phil Norton, EMIC Sales, received 2-gallon pins.

One gallon pins were presented to Mike Galante, R&D; Henry Hook and Walt Scott, Chemical Production; and Earle Root, Synthetic Production.

Plant Joins JOBS ’70

The Chemical plant recently joined the JOBS ’70 consortium organized by the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce. The consortium, or group of businesses, has 15 member industries and a goal of 180 job slots to be filled this year. The Chamber organized the group under a grant from the National Alliance of Businessmen and the Federal Department of Labor.

The JOBS program is aimed at training area people for meaningful employment. The trainees are given work orientation, counseling, total image development, job related education and on-the-job training.

The program participants are grouped into clusters according to the type of training to be received. One cluster of 15 girls, who learned to be clerk-typists and transcriptionists, have already been placed in Uniroyal facilities. Four of the girls are now working at the Chemical plant; and 11 at the Oxford Administrative and Research Center.

In charge of the Chamber’s portion of the program is Gus Maultsby. The Chemical plants’ representative with JOBS ’70 is Milt Makoski and the Uniroyal Corporate representative, Rita Garramone.

Local 308 Picnic Set

URW Local 308 will hold its 4th Annual Picnic for Union members on Sunday, August 8, at Schildgen’s Grove on East Waterbury Road in Union City. The picnic starts at 10 A.M. and ends at 6 P.M.

Chairman for this year’s event is Art Calder, assisted by Committee members Walt Bieleski, Nunzio Pastore, Wes Burns and Jack Muckle. A $2.00 charge will be assessed members for food and refreshments, which includes steaks, hamburgers, clams and corp.

Safety Glasses Save Eyesight of Five Employees

Set Goals; Show Results

The Management By Objective program at the Chemical plant uses results as the major measurement criterion. The purpose of the program is to provide the challenge of individual responsibility; a sense of accomplishment; and personal involvement in the successful operation of the plant during the year.

In the program supervisory personnel and members of their departments mutually define specific goals, individual areas of responsibility, and the results that can be expected on the job. The objectives for each department must fit into the overall objectives of the plant so that each group in the plant works as a unity toward the plant’s and Company’s objectives.

Emphasizes Results

Results, rather than activity, is the measurement by which each person is appraised. Since the individual helps set his own goals, he is accountable for his own achievements.

To be measurable, the objectives are set up as specific as possible in dollars, amounts, times, percentage, quality and other categories.

Four standards are used in the measurement guide which are reviewed quarterly and revised, or new standards and targets set as necessary: 1) Result Areas; 2) Measurements; 3) Commitments; and 4) Supportive Action.

When properly carried out the program provides the individual the incentive to achieve results which he helped set for himself by organizing his time and activities in a logical, systematic method.


Savings Bond Drive Starts

On May 25 a U.S. Savings Bond drive was initiated in the plant to offer all employees an opportunity to purchase Savings Bonds.

In view of the new higher interest rate of 5 1/2%, more people are taking a new look at Savings Bonds as a safe, systematic investment.

For convenience, the Bonds can be purchased by regular payroll deductions.

Presently 35% of the plant’s employees are buying U.S. Savings Bonds through the Payroll Savings Plan.

Application forms for enrollment can be obtained from the Bond Drive Committee members, Foremen, Supervisors or from Gladys Bradshaw, Industrial Relations Department, ext. 517.

Completed forms should be returned to W. Lavelle, Industrial Relations Department.


Don’t drive after taking certain pills, such as tranquilizers or antihistamines. They may have side effects that affect judgment, cause dizziness, sleepiness, and confusion.

During April, safety glasses saved the eyesight of five employees when accidents occurred in different areas of the plant. In each case it was almost certain that the eyesight would have been damaged permanently if safety glasses had not been worn at the time of the accident.

“The reaction seemed somewhat peculiar, and I asked Dr. Steve Cantor to come over and observe the experiment.

DEAR FELLOW EMPLOYEE:

The National Safety Council recently presented an Award of Merit to the Naugatuck Chemical plant in recognition of its notable safety achievement in 1970. The Award was based on the significant drop in our lost-time accidents during the year: only 6 compared to 24 for each of the three previous years.

In helping to attain this performance, everyone in the plant deserves to be congratulated. Such an achievement is the result only of individual effort and cooperation. With everyone’s increasing concern for safety, we should continue to improve on our experience.

During April, this safety awareness really paid off. Five employees were involved in near-serious eye accidents that would certainly have resulted in damage to their sight. Fortunately, all were wearing their safety glasses at the time of the accidents.

Although our on-the-job safety performance has improved, let’s not overlook safety when away from the job.

Off-the-job safety becomes especially important as the warm weather and vacation time approaches.

At this time there’s a tendency to take extra risks in working around the house—using lawnmowers, climbing ladders, or lifting heavy objects.

Or on vacation, there’s the urge to do everything fast—driving carelessly, exercising too vigorously in sports.

Whether at work, at home, or on vacation—let’s continue to place a great deal of emphasis on good safety habits. Not only you, but your family and fellow employees will benefit from it.

Nystrom Gets $300 Grant

Harvey J. Nystrom, son of Walt Nystrom, a Millwright in the Chemical Mechanical Department, received the Uniroyal Chemical Management Club’s $250 scholarship award, along with an additional $50 from the Larry Monroe Fund.

Ranked first among 172 seniors at Southbury High School, Nystrom was selected as recipient of the Scholarship from 15 applicants. According to Joe Bucciaglia, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, “all of this year’s applicants were deserving of the scholarship. It was most difficult for the committee to select one person.”

Besides his outstanding scholastic record, Nystrom was president of the National Honor Society, a State of Connecticut Scholar, and an active participant in a number of extracurricular activities.

He received a Certificate from Knox College for a special Science Training Program for High Ability high school students and a Certificate of De Merite En Francais for his proficiency in French. For his outstanding performance on the National Educational Development Tests, he received a Certificate of Educational Development which is awarded only to students for outstanding educational capabilities.

Nystrom will major in Physics at Cornell University and plans to do postgraduate work in Astro-Physics.

Other members of the Scholarship Committee who screened the applications for the annual award were Irwin Prager and Bob Kaiser.


Logic-Networks Plan Initiated For Liquid Waste Pretreatment Plant

To construct the new $3,000,000 Liquid Waste Pretreatment Plant on schedule, a systematic, scientific plan for the complex pollution abatement project was initiated to achieve the target completion date in December, 1972. This major project involves a coordinated effort by many groups to identify the sources of pollution; to eliminate and reduce pollution; and to construct and put into actual operation the Waste Pretreatment Plant.

Logic-Networks Used

The Logic-Networks system is being used to plan, coordinate, monitor and control the pollution abatement project. It is an easy-to-understand, graphical way to plan a project. It shows the time sequence and the interaction of the many tasks and the people involved. This time-logic diagram then becomes a way for the project manager to monitor the project. Decisions can be made to expedite the project to meet the project goals on schedule. The time-logic diagram also serves as a work-discipline tool for the hundreds of people involved, since they are aware of their participation and timing and how it affects the project.

A master Logic-Network was prepared by Al Manzi, Pollution Abatement Project Leader, and Dick Shaw, Project Engineer. The master network shows the broad objectives of the project. Sub-networks were then developed for the participating groups. These show the detailed effort that each group must accomplish to reach the project goal. These sub-networks are: Start-up of the Waste Pretreatment Plant by Dick Shaw; Identifying and Sampling streams in the Plants—Joe Bucciaglia for the Chemical Plant, B. T. Dave for the Synthetic Plant, John Prior for the Reclaim Plant, Gary Arndt for the Pilot Plants – Yard Abatement by Bob Van Allen; Information and Discussion by Neil Melore; Purchasing by Hal Lynch and Bruce Perkins; R & D Labs by Lou Coscia; Early Warning System by C. H. Kim; and Liquid Waste Testing by Irwin Prager; and Chemical Tests by Frank Lussier.

Editor’s Note: Gene Hertel, of the R & D Department, has lectured extensively on Logic-Networks programs at the Tire, Footwear, and Chemical Division plants.


Bloodmobile Visit June 10

On Thursday, June 10, Uniroyal Chemical will sponsor its annual blood drive. 150 pints is the plant’s goal for this year.

Because of the facilities of St. Michael’s Parish House, the Bloodmobile will be located there from 9:45 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. Since blood is so urgently needed in the State, all employees are urged to donate.

$1,564 Lost In GMF Fire

$1,564 was lost in a fire which occurred in the GMF® grinding section of Bldg. 101. While grinding the chemical, used as an accelerator for curing butyl rubber, a flash fire broke out. The GMF operator on the second shift pulled the fire alarm and the heat from the fire turned on the overhead sprinkler system.

Quick action by the fire inspectors and chemical production operators prevented more serious damage.

200 lbs. of GMF were destroyed, for a loss of over $500. Mechanical and electrical equipment damage totalled more than $500. Water damage, clean-up, and repairs approximated $500.

The fire was the first in the plant this year which amounted to a sizeable damage. The exact cause of the blaze is still undetermined.

Fuel Costs Doubled For 1971

Save Steam Plan Started In Plant

Total fuel costs for 1971 will be approximately double over 1970. $1,143,000 has been budgeted to operate the plant during the year against actual costs of $638,000 for last year.

The $505,000 increased cost of fuel is primarily due to escalating residual oil prices which are a result of the Mid-East crisis, tanker shortages and pollution abatement conversions to oil. An added cost is the premium we will pay for low sulfur oil after Sept. 1, 1971.

Safety Equipment Program

As part of the plant’s continuous concern for the safety of all employees, a new safety equipment program has been initiated.

The program is based on a section of the 1970 Uniroyal-URW Master Agreement which emphasizes that all employees are expected to cooperate in the prevention of accidents to themselves and their fellow workmen and shall be required to utilize such protective devices and equipment prescribed by the Company at no cost to the employee.

Profits Off $4,100,000

Uniroyal showed a $4,100,000 loss for the 4th quarter of 1970 compared to a profit of $8,400,000 in 1969.

Sales for the same quarter were $371,000,000, a decrease of $17,000,000 from the same period last year.

1970 sales of the company were $1.554 billion, almost the exact amount as the prior year. Net income for 1970 was $23,800,000 compared to a net income of $46,600,000 in the year of 1969.

The decrease in 1970 profits and sales were attributed to the GM strike, the general softness in the economy, high interest charges, sharply higher employment costs, higher transportation charges and other costs not fully absorbed by price increases or productivity improvements.

Plant Business Down

During the year production of reclaimed rubber, latex and rubber chemicals was affected by the slackness in the automotive industry, home construction and the shutdown of several Uniroyal tire plants.

The plant’s business shows scarcely any improvement according to present sales forecasts for the first quarter of 1971.

Every effort needs to be made at this critical time in our economy to prevent off grade production, improve productivity and quality, and to keep customers satisfied.


Dividend Declared

Uniroyal declared a quarterly dividend of 17½ cents a share on the company’s common stock. The dividend is payable March 25 to stockholders of record on February 22.

The Company also declared two dividends of $2 each on Uniroyal’s preferred stock. One will be paid March 25 to stockholders of record February 22 and the other payable June 25 to stockholders of record on May 24.


Elephant Tests Chair

Elsie, a 5,000 pound elephant, torture tests a molded urethane plastic chair made by a new process developed by Rubicon Chemicals, a Company jointly owned by Uniroyal Chemical and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. The liquid urethane chemicals are poured into special chair molds and react into a rigid foam to create furniture that has fantastic strength, is lightweight and easily movable. The shells are then filled with flexible foam for deep seating comfort and upholstered with Naugahyde® vinyl.

Research work on the new process was done in Bldg. 75 by Tom Haggerty, Group Leader; John Chapman; Don Zalewa; Ken Ferreira and Jim McGinn.

Lost Time Accidents Drop To 6

The incidence of lost time accidents showed a major improvement in 1970. The plant had only 6 compared to the 23 in 1969. Two of the accidents occurred in December in an odd situation.

An employee fell on ice and fractured two ribs. A few days later he visited Dr. Jelley at the Chemical plant hospital prior to his return to work. After his checkup, Tom Doran, a plant driver, drove him home. When Doran stopped for a stop sign, a trailer truck skidded into the station wagon, injuring Doran who suffered a severe neck strain. One of the safest, most experienced drivers in the plant, Tom lost a month of work when the “unexpected happened“.

Accidents Cost $150,507

The 6 lost time accidents and 66 serious injuries cost the plant $150,507 in 1970. The outside medical bills for hospitalization, X-rays, specialists, medicines and doctors’ visits were $49,214. The money paid out for Work-

257 employees received $8,900 for Ideas in 1970. A high award of $476 was made to Al Urban for his idea to reuse butyl tuber heads which were previously discarded after short use. The butyl is now reclaimed; finished; and sold, saving materials cost and scrap haulage charges. It took six months to evaluate the idea for which Urban received an initial award of $50 and a subsequent award of $426.

DEAR FELLOW EMPLOYEE:

Recently I was pleased to announce to the general public that our Management had approved funds to construct waste pre-treatment facilities at our plant. This expenditure of close to $3,000,000, along with successful negotiations of an agreement with the Borough of Naugatuck to provide secondary treatment of our wastes, will bring us a long way in meeting our obligations to help clean up the Naugatuck River.

However, I am very much concerned that each of us realize our individual part in doing the total job to control pollution. No matter what Management does or spends on pollution control facilities, these actions will never be effective unless every employee shows a personal concern to eliminate pollution in his activities.

We all have to face up to our individual responsibilities to avoid spills, careless dumping of spoiled materials and excessive flushing of processing areas. In practice, we have to operate on the basis that the drain is the very last alternative for disposal.

We can not wait for the new treatment plants before we start to operate in this manner. We have to learn right away to put into practice “NO DRAIN” operation. To stop pollution everybody must do their part – we are all counting on each other to do the job!

There’s been a major improvement in handling Ideas; some because of their complexity require more time; others take less time. Ideas are worth $1,000 . . . and more. The minimum award is $25.


“Mountain Moved”. Improves Safety. 3 Acres Added

What was once a “mountain” in the middle of the plant has been moved away during the past nine weeks and is now three acres of flat usable land.

Falling rocks on the steep banks on the west side of Buildings 73, 101W and 106 made it impossible to get heavy equipment into this location from the plant yard area or at the top of the bank to remove these large loose rocks.

Moved At No Cost

In the discussions with five different contractors about this problem, an agreement was made with the Waterbury Sand and Gravel Company to remove and level the top of this high hilly bank between Building 75 and the Synthetic Pilot Plant at no charge to Uniroyal Chemical for the privilege of keeping all the gravel to process in their plant for their ultimate use. At this writing, nine weeks of work has been done. The trees, brush and a 45 ft. x 45 ft. x 6 ft. deep concrete reservoir were removed along with approximately 40,000 cubic yards of gravel.

The contractor used a five cubic yard payloader, one bulldozer and eight 10 cubic yard capacity trucks to do this work. Each truck made 13 trips daily. If we had to pay for this work ourselves, the cost would have run $1,200 daily.

Land Now Usable

When this project is completed, the plant will be able to bring in a crane at the top of the levelled bank to remove the large loose rocks which created a safety hazard. We will also have three acres of what was unusable land, levelled and suitable for future use.

DEAR FELLOW EMPLOYEE:

During most of the 1960’s, in fact until about mid-1969, our plant has operated in what Jim Cronin has called an “oversold” position. In other words, we were operating all out to produce every pound we could, to meet our customers’ requirements.

In 1969 the situation changed to what can be called an “undersold” position, which means we can produce more than the customer needs. This fairly abrupt change from what had become an established way of operating has affected the way all of us do our jobs. Basically, under these conditions all of us have to make better decisions faster in order to be responsive to the customers’ needs at the moment.

Considering the general decline in business activity in the markets we serve, the high cost of money, the “undersold” capacity of domestic competition and increasing foreign competition, I expect that these conditions will continue well into 1970. Therefore, it becomes even more important that we be as flexible to change as possible. Under these circumstances what we did yesterday isn’t important. What is important, is what we do right now to meet a new opportunity.

All of us have expressed individual pride in the flexibility of our plant – men and machinery alike – to do the job, whatever the requirements. Now if we really have this flexibility, and I believe we do, it seems to me that the economic climate of 1970 plays right into our hands.

I’m confident we can and will meet these demands regardless of how difficult they may be.

Jaroy, Junior Achievement of Uniroyal, is a small company with big goals. On its first day of sales, the company sold every product made during the past months.

Jaroy is a Junior Achievement company sponsored by Uniroyal Chemical, and consists of Naugatuck High School students and one Achiever from Holy Cross High.

The basic principle of the JA program is to give high school students real business experience and to help them develop an accurate understanding of the economic factors that make the free enterprise system work.

Issues Stock For Capital

The company issues and sells stock for its operating capital. This money is used to buy raw materials, tools, pay rent, heat, and light bills, and other expenditures to operate the business. Jaroy pays regular salaries, and taxes, carries insurance, and pays dividends to stockholders from any profits made.

Living Economics

Economics can be a difficult subject, especially when taught from a textbook and by lectures. In Junior Achievement, the student puts into practice what is taught in school about complicated practices and theories. Be-

Trucks Get Safety Belts

Safety belts are being installed in all plant trucks for safety protection for plant drivers as a result of a survey by the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory of Cornell University.

For a long time, the trucking industry had questioned the value of safety belts in trucks because of the floating seat drivers used for comfort, but the survey results indicate otherwise.

A study of 243 truck accidents showed the frequency of door openings in trucks to be double the frequency of door openings in 1963 model automobiles. The frequency of truck driver ejection was shown to be about double the frequency of driver ejections from recent model automobiles. The rate of dangerous or fatal injuries for ejected truck drivers was four times as high as for non-ejected truck drivers. Therefore, it is believed

In the final analysis, however, Safety is the responsibility of every employee. Unless he has a safety attitude, performs his job safely, wears the proper safety clothing and equipment and avoids taking chances, accidents and injuries will continue to happen.

55,200 persons were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 1968, an increase of 4% over 1967.


Foremen’s Club Changes Name And By-Laws

By a high margin vote, the Uniroyal Chemical Foremen’s Club changed its name to the Uniroyal Chemical Management Club.

The new by-laws open membership to all male salaried personnel. Members of the Divisional staff are now eligible for the Club but are not eligible to hold office.

Dues were increased from $6 to $8 yearly.

Chemical Control Center Reviews Quality, Productivity, and Costs

The Chemical Control Center (CCC) in Chemical Production was established 18 months ago to increase productivity, improve the quality of our products and to decrease costs. The center was set up by Walt Frankenberger who organized the procedures for operating it.

By weekly and daily review of production pounds, quality, and costs, the Center controls productivity and spots downward trends in the plant which require adjustment. The CCC also reviews on a monthly basis the performance against set standards of every chemical made by the plant during the previous month and year to date. This evaluation is based on raw material usage, yield and productivity expressed in pounds per hour. A report is then given to the responsible foreman and process engineer so that corrective action can be taken, if necessary.

For daily control, a daily batch card is used for reporting the date and number of batches made each day. The cards are turned in daily to the center, logged, and sent to EMIC for further processing.

The number of batches for the major chemical products are plotted on control boards, shown in the photo, where they are compared to a set standard and on which a rolling average is maintained. When the number of batches drop below the standard, the person in any business.

Suggestions for improving the plant’s overall operations can provide benefits which go beyond the money received for a suggestion award. Contributing suggestions and ideas involves a person in the successful operation of the plant and brings a personal satisfaction to his job. No matter what you may think of your suggestion, don’t hesitate to send it in. It may turn out to be an important one.

73 employees recently received $1,455. for their suggestions out of the 150 suggestions which were reviewed. The highest single award of $50 went to Fred Mayo. Joe Wojtczak received $70 for several suggestions. John Painter, a consistent winner, got $65; Ed Bazenas $55; Al Urban of Reclaim $50 and Bob Lockwood of Synthetic Production $47.50.

Receiving $40 for their suggestions were Fernando Henriques, R. Fratangelo, Ed Semaskvich and Elmer Anderson. Joe Moniz of Reclaim obtained $35 for his idea on improving the cleaning of Sweco screens; J. Gallucci $30 for a safety suggestion, and $30 to W. Anderson, Fred Engle, J. Lawton, J. Wawer and J. Gandolfo.

$25 awards were received by H. Rich, J. Wawer, J. Matcheson, J. Brown, L. foreman gives a detailed explanation of the causes for the lost production.

Since daily control was initiated, rubber chemical production has consistently improved over production prior to September 1968. The quality of rubber chemicals has also improved through the Center’s operation. By improving production and quality, the Center helps to provide better service to our customers, the most important person in any business.

New Curalon

thane elastomers; developed the product, Vibrathane, the tradename for our polyurethane elastomers. Our Research and Development technology in rubber chemicals led to the development of Curalon L whose use should grow at a 20 per cent rate annually.

Polyurethane elastomers cured with Curalon possess high resistance to wear and tear and have excellent shock absorption properties. Because of these properties, they are used for grain chute linings, industrial truck tires, gears, mountings and printing rolls where they outlast rubber 3 to 4 times longer.

Project engineers of the new plant were Neil Klarfeld and Jim Garrigan. Lou Kaiser is the process engineer, responsible for the manufacturing operation.

Save Your Blood For June 12

June 12 has been reserved as Uniroyal Chemical’s day for blood donations. Because of its convenient facilities, the Bloodmobile will be held at St. Michael’s Parish House in Naugatuck. Our quota is 150 pints.

Employees have donated generously since the visits started in 1957 when 190 pints were given. Since then, we have averaged about 170 pints each visit.

Blood is in great demand today. By contributing, you can help be sure that blood is available for you or your family. Let’s try for the 190 pints again.

Sales Set Record; Profits Drop 10.5%

Sales of Uniroyal, Inc. set new records for the thirty-nine weeks ending September 28, 1969, but profits failed to keep pace with sales, and took a 10.5% drop.

Sales for the nine month period totaled $1,165,502,000, an increase of 9.9% compared with $1,060,659,000 reported for 1968. Profits, however, were $38,184,000, equivalent to $1.33 a share of common stock, 10.5% lower than the $42,650,000 or $1.55 a share for 1968.

The third quarter sales for 1969 were $368,869,000 compared to $341,874,000 for 1968 and net income was $8,292,000 equivalent to 27 cents a common share compared with $12,769,000 or 45 cents a share last year. Third quarter earnings in 1969 were based on a greater number of shares outstanding.

Profits were hurt by increasing inflationary factors, including rising costs for wages and raw materials, as well as higher interest rates on borrowed capital.

The Company also encountered abnormally high production costs for new tire constructions and greater start-up expenses for new and expanded production facilities.


Contact Lenses Are Unsafe

Many employees are not fully aware of the dangers in wearing contact lenses in the plant.

Chemicals and dusts which enter the eye and work their way behind the lens cannot be washed out until the lens is removed. Very often permanent damage to the eye can result before this can be done.

There is a rule which is included in the Laboratory Safety Manual stating, Contact Lenses are not to be worn in the plant. For your own safety and to prevent injury to eyesight, it is extremely important to observe this rule.


Dividend Declared

Uniroyal declared a dividend of 17½ cents a share on its common stock. It will be payable December 24 to stockholders of record on November 24.

This payment will bring total dividends paid on the stock in 1969 to 70 cents a share.

Approximately 65% of the Naugatuck plant employees are stockholders or participants in the Stock Purchase Plan.

Sometime back I had occasion to question one of our people why a certain function was being performed in the manner that it was being done. Much to my surprise, the answer was, “It’s Company policy.” I asked, “What do you mean, ‘Company policy’?, Who set the policy?” After a blank look, I received the answer, “Folklore and Tradition”.

While tradition has a place as part of our heritage, it has little place in building a flexible, responsive, up-to-date organization that can effectively deal with the rapid changing demands that we, together, must meet to make our plant competitive in today’s world.

As I have said before, progress is change, and each of us must learn to look upon change as progress. We have to be the first ones to find the best way of doing our jobs or we find ourselves always trying to catch up. I’m sure we all prefer to be leaders.

Let’s take a strong look at the “Folklore and Traditions” in our activities. Let’s all ask ourselves, “How can I do my job more effectively?” Let’s remember that the payoff is results and we each play a part in finding a better way to achieve those results.

Five Hurt In Accidents

From June 14 to Sept. 5, the plant worked 830,084 man-hours without a lost-time accident, almost hitting the 1,000,000 mark.

But September brought five lost-time accidents. The first occurred when an employee slipped from a ladder fracturing his forearm. The second happened near the plant when an employee’s car hit the rear of the plant’s station wagon, causing a neck injury to the plant driver. While pulling hose on the job, an employee strained his back. The fourth accident took place in Long Island when one of the plant’s new trucks was slammed in the rear by a trailer truck, causing face, chest and neck injuries to the plant driver. The plant’s month-old truck was totally demolished. Both road accidents were clearcut cases of the unexpected happening. The fifth accident happened when an employee was splashed in the eye by a chemical while filling drums. He was wearing safety glasses but did not have the required chemical splash goggles for the job.

Our safety record will improve only when every employee realizes that safety is his responsibility. Wearing safety hats, safety shoes, safety glasses, proper protective equipment on the job will help reduce accidents. Moving drums and lifting heavy equipment properly prevents serious back injuries.

But the most important step to stop this rate is for every employee to think safety every minute of the day . . . and to expect the unexpected happening.

Customers Secure Our Jobs

In today’s competitive economy, our pay and employment come from our customers, and the only sure type of job security is keeping and increasing our customers. If there are no customers, there will be no jobs.

Keeping a customer can be achieved only when everyone performs his job responsibly and by doing the kind of job that will hold and win new customers. Job security is the responsibility of everyone working together in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.

When production drops, the cost of operating the plant increases and can affect our pay considerably. Lower production means increased cost which the customer will not pay. Naturally he looks to a competitor for a better price which is exactly what all of us would do if we were shopping for a car, a TV set or a washing machine.

Keeping the customer through improved production of quality products increases substantially better job security for all employees.


Reclaim Dust Collectors . . .

A year’s operation at design capacities in Fiber Separation and Fine Grinding have proved this decision right, as studies have indicated that only five of the twenty cyclones in the system are not operating efficiently.

The Plant Engineering Department, after considerable study, selected the proper equipment necessary to collect the lint from the five cyclones to reduce the present problem. Delivery of the equipment has been made, and the duct work and structural supports have been installed.

Upon completion of the work, a substantial reduction in lint escape will be achieved, and another step taken in the plant’s continuing program to make it a cleaner, safer place to work.

Profits Help Buy New Equipment

Several million dollars in capital investment to improve the efficiency of the plant’s productive capabilities will be invested in new equipment, expansion, and new facilities. These investments cost considerable money without any immediate financial return. Because of the strong competition in the chemical industry, old machinery must be replaced with more efficient equipment to keep ahead of reinvested in new equipment and tools to help perform our jobs more effectively and to increase production. The goods produced with better tools can be sold to the customer at a lower cost because their production is more efficient.

Some Questions And Answers On Bereavement Pay Benefits

The bereavement pay benefit is one of the many different benefits which Uniroyal gives to people employed at a plant where a United Rubber Workers Union exist. At the Naugatuck plant there are two URW locals: Local 218 covers the Chemical and Reclaim plants; and Local 308 covers the Synthetic plant. This benefit applies only to the wage members of the two Locals.

In 1968 Uniroyal contributed $318,303 in Bereavement Pay Benefits to employees working in plants covered by the United Rubber Workers Union contract.

Q. When am I eligible for bereavement pay?
A. An employee who is absent from work after 30 days from date of hire because of the death of a member of his immediate family, or a dependent who lives in the household, shall be paid his straight time average hourly earnings, if an incentive worker or his current hourly rate if on day work for time lost from his regularly scheduled shift.

Q. How many days’ pay do I receive?
A. You shall be paid (3) consecutive working days. It is understood the 3 days of paid bereavement pay shall be related in time to the death for which such payment is made.

Applies To Your Immediate Family

Q. Who is immediate family?
A. Immediate family is defined to mean husband, wife, father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, brother, sister, or the employee’s children. The foregoing intended to cover legal as well as blood relationships.

Q. Are uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins covered under bereavement pay?
A. No. They are not members of the immediate family.

Q. What happens if death occurs while I am on vacation?
A. Your vacation will be extended and payment will be made, provided the employee notifies a designated member of management.

Legal Relatives

Q. What does legal relationship mean?
A. The term legal relationship is interpreted to mean father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, the spouse’s grandparents and legally adopted children. A brother-in-law or sister-in-law is the employee’s spouse’s brother or sister. Although by custom or practice the spouse of an employee’s spouse’s brother or sister is referred to as a brother-in-law or sister-in-law to the employee, such relationship is not contemplated by reference to brother-in-law or sister-in-law for eligibility for bereavement pay.

Q. Must I attend the funeral to be eligible?
A. No. While it is not necessary that the employee actually attend the funeral, as in the case of a relative who dies in some distant place, the time off must be related in time to the death and cannot be arbitrarily deferred to some later time, such as an addition to a vacation or the like.

How To Apply

Q. What must I do as an employee in case of bereavement?
A. You should contact your supervisor or foreman and make sure you are eligible for bereavement pay. You must then bring in a clipping from the newspaper when you return to work and your supervisor will turn in a bereavement pay form to the Industrial Relations department.

Q. Who can inform me on bereavement pay benefits?
A. For further information on bereavement pay benefits, speak to your foreman or supervisor. He will be glad to answer any questions you have on this benefit or other benefits provided by Uniroyal. If he doesn’t have the answer, he will obtain the proper information for you.

The Safety Department announced the winner in the new plant Safety Contest. The contest is similar to last year’s “free coffee” cards which were distributed to members of a department completing a full month without a lost-time accident or a serious injury.

In this new Safety Prize program there is an added incentive, in that each successive month a department continues its record intact (no lost-time accident or serious injury) all members become eligible for a more valuable prize.

Several weeks ago, everyone in the plant was given Uniroyal pocket protectors which automatically placed them on the first step of the Safety program. The prize which was won by the Research and Development department was a handy litter container and Help sign for automobiles.

The contest will continue through 1969, with a new contest starting in January 1970.

The breakdown of departments is as follows: Chemical Production; Reclaim Production (including Dispersions and Raw Stock); Materials Handling at Chemical and Synthetic (including Small Packaging, Parcel Post and Janitors); Synthetic Production; Research and Development (Pilot Plants and Laboratories); Mechanical Departments (Synthetic and Chemical).

The winners for the first month’s contest were all persons in Research and Development, including the Pilot Plants and Laboratory sections.

Other prizes included in the Safety Contest are key chains, pocket memo pads, change purses, bottle and can openers, ash trays and coffee mugs.


33 Join U.S. Bond Plan

The annual U.S. Savings Bond and Freedom Share drive which was recently concluded saw 33 employees purchase Bonds and Shares through the thrifty, systematic payroll plan. Twenty-one increased their participation in the plan. The total number now enrolled in the plan is 595 or 35% of the plant employees. Company-wide participation in the U.S. Savings Bond plan is approximately 52% with some Uniroyal plants participating 100%.

A committee of seventy-three canvassers, organized in different sections of the plant and sales headquarters, contacted all employees during the drive.

Two departments deserve special recognition for increased employee participation during the drive: Reclaim Production and Reclaim Research and Development.

Anyone may still join the payroll deduction plan anytime during the year by contacting his foreman or supervisor.


No July Accidents

For the first time this year, no lost time accidents or serious injuries took place in the plant. Hopefully, July is the beginning of another 1,000,000 manhours worked without a lost time accident which was achieved in 1968.

With every employee’s personal involvement in following the safety rules required in the different plant areas and in his particular job, a 1,000,000 manhours can be reached again.

The most important person in continuing this encouraging trend is YOU. Only YOU can help prevent accidents to yourself and the people you work with in your area. Your daily concern for working safe will make the Naugatuck plant a better, safer place to work.

New “Idea Plan” Offers $1000 Cash Awards

For many years, Uniroyal Chemical has operated a Suggestion System for employees to submit original ideas and receive cash awards for them.

To encourage employees to participate more fully in the plan, and to reward them more for their originality and experience, Uniroyal has initiated a new “Idea Plan.”

The Company has raised the minimum award from $15 to $25 and the maximum at the local plant level to $1,000. If an idea is worth more, it will be submitted to a management committee for consideration for an additional award.

The new Plan will cut out the red tape and eliminate the long delays before a suggestion is acted upon. Employees will be informed as quickly as possible whether or not their ideas have been accepted or rejected.

For effective and immediate handling of submitted ideas, Larry Koth, Industrial Engineering Manager, has been designated the plant’s Idea Plan Administrator. Each department will have an idea coordinator.

Department coordinators selected so far are: Lou Coscia, Research and Development; Larry Mambrino, Control; Pat Petti, Purchasing; Sam Gillette, Chemical Production; Milt Makoski, Industrial Relations; Ernst Krauss, Engineering; Bill Albaitis, Materials.

Employees will be kept fully informed on the details of the new Plan as it is implemented. Now’s the time to start thinking and jot down your ideas on work methods, equipment or supplies, customer service, product quality, new products, safety, waste reduction, production increase, shipping, packaging and many others.

The new Uniroyal Idea Plan provides every employee the opportunity to increase his earnings, simply by jotting down and submitting the hundreds of ideas in his head. $1,000 . . . and even more is worth a try.

830,000 Hours; No Accidents

The plant almost reached the magic 1,000,000 manhours worked without a losttime accident. During July and August, no lost-time accidents occurred.

However, on September 6, after reaching 830,084 manhours, an employee slipped from a ladder and fell backwards into a ditch, fracturing his forearm.

As of August 31 there were 3 less lost-time accidents for the same period in 1968, a slight improvement. There was a decrease of 16 serious injuries for the same period.

Whether at work, home, or on the road, safety is your personal responsibility. Your unsafe act may result in a serious injury to a fellow employee.

The irony of safety is that the person responsible for the accident, often escapes injury.

As the paper went to press another lost time accident was reported on September 11, when a driver stopped to give a ride to an employee walking to work. The station wagon was hit in the rear and the driver suffered from a whiplash, loosing several days of work.


Housekeeping Prevents Fires

The week with October 9 in it – the day of the Great Chicago Fire – has been set aside as Fire Prevention Week to focus attention on the tragic loss of lives and families from fire. Starting October 6, the plant will hold a weeklong series of fire drills, tours and demonstrations on the proper action to take in case of a plant fire and the safety measures to prevent them.

A major cause of fire in the plant is poor housekeeping and only the alertness of safety-minded employees and the quick response of the fire department to alarms has prevented serious damage.

Good housekeeping in your area makes it safer to work in and certainly more enjoyable, as well as a major contribution in fire prevention.

Fire Prevention in our plant is a 52 week a year operation and we feel sure that employees realize this and make it a year-round practice.


Open House Held For Retirees

150 retired employees attended the “Open House” which included tours of the Chemical, Reclaim and Synthetic plants renewed friendships, and lunch at the Synthetic cafeteria.

Noticeable to the retirees were the many improvements to the plant during the past few years: the new front entrance, the modernization of the Reclaim plant, the new Control Center and other building improvements.

Several commented on the courtesy of the Foremen and Supervisors who conducted the tours and the plant drivers who provided rides.

Fred Wintsch and Milt Makoski were in charge of the program. Molly Cobbol and Marion Hutt served as receptionists.

October again brings us each the opportunity to invest in the sixteen agencies supported by the United Givers of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls. Each of these agencies, working in essential health, welfare and educational activities, makes our community a better place to live for our families and our friends. Beyond this, many of the agencies have an outreach of service beyond our borders to neighboring towns and to the nation.

We at Uniroyal Chemical have, in each year’s campaign, shown a greater willingness to give to these causes. Yet, our average gift per employee last year was something less than $13.00 per year for all of these needs. Our average is this low because some one-third of us did not give last year and some half of us gave a cash donation rather than spreading our giving by utilizing the payroll deduction plan.

When the canvasser calls on us this year, let’s all give something and let’s all pledge on payroll deductions. I think we all will be pleasantly surprised when the results are in.

Three Named Chairmen For Borough’s United Givers Drive

Over the years, the Naugatuck plant has participated in community activities by sponsoring the Junior Achievement, Naugatuck High School Career Observation Program, the Explorers, the United Givers, and other community and civic programs.

For its campaign drive this year, the United Givers of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls named Ron Mitchinson Industrial Relations Manager, Campaign Chairman for the overall drive; Doug Miller, Superintendent of Engineering, as Chairman of the Corporate division and Fred Wintsch, Labor Relations Manager, as Chairman of the Commercial group.

The annual United Givers drive is one of the major events in the community to support the charitable, social and youth work of the 16 Agencies in the campaign. This year’s goal for the campaign is $145,000 to help continue and improve the worthwhile activities of the participating groups.

Dr. Edward Jelley accepted the position of plant physician replacing Dr. Elser. Dr. Jelley, a prominent physician with offices in Naugatuck, will be available at the Chemical Plant hospital from 8:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. and at the Synthetic Plant hospital from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., Monday through Friday, except holidays.

The Chemical and Synthetic plant nurses, Adeline Farrar, R.N. and Ann McAllister, R.N., are on duty from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. The Chemical nurse is also on duty Saturday morning, 8:00 A.M. to 12 Noon.

To prevent cuts, bruises or dust in the eye from becoming serious injuries, employees should see the plant nurse immediately and have the problem taken care of as a preventive measure against further complications.

In case of an accident or injury during the second or third shift, the night general foreman should be contacted by calling the night watchman on EXT. 670 who will contact the general foreman by radio for immediate attention.


Employee Snow Tire Sale On

The special employee snow tire sale runs for two months until Nov. 28. On sale are the Glas-Belt Snowplow, Glas-Belt Winter Patrol, Snowplow, and the Winter Patrol.

Purchases may be made at Uniroyal Home and Auto Centers and Uniroyal Tire Dealers.

Slips can be obtained from Industrial Relations; Ann McAllister, Synthetic plant nurse; Luella Anderson TSSC; and Diana Strollo, EMIC.

The Executive Committee for the plant is Eric Johnson, Leon Raskauskas, Joe Rzeszutek, Milt Makoski, Gene Hertel, Roger Amidon, Jack Vergosen, Joe Bucciaglia, Bob Foltz, Frank Lynch and Vic Anderson.

Chairmen of the various plant sections and departments are Roger Lestage, Pat Tortorici, Carl Wehmann, Paul Laurenzi, Sal Sapio, Mike Dodd, Phil Morin, Stan Mazur, Doug Ritchie, Bob Grahame, Dom Scalzo, Al Juliano and Mary Vergosen.


Dividend Declared

Uniroyal declared a dividend of 17½ cents a share on its common stock. The dividend was payable September 25 to stockholders of record on August 25.

A dividend of $2 a share on the 8 percent first preferred stock was also declared and payable September 25 to stockholders of record on August 25.

New Staff For Chemical Control Center

New assignments were made to the Chemical Production Control Center which was recently established. Heading the new system is Walt Frankenberger, and working as Technical Assistant is Clark Makinson.

Tom Dowling will coordinate mechanical work in the chemical plant.

Francis Egan and Matty Mathewson will work on scheduling, raw materials and quality control. Also assigned to the Center, Mildred Finsel will handle the clerical responsibilities.

As a result of the new staff assignments, several changes were made in the plant.

John Honyotski assumes responsibility for all thiazoles operations. Tom Engle takes over as Foreman in thiazole operations. Lloyd McCoy assumes charge of Bldg. 100. Earl Roller becomes Foreman of the Central Finishing Dept. Bob Cronin was made Foreman of Bldg. 88 and Tom Carey assumes the position of Production Clerk.


Fathers-Sons See Amazing Mets Play

The photo below shows some of the eighty-three who attended the Mets-Dodgers baseball game at Shea Stadium on Saturday, August 23. The Father-Son baseball trip sponsored by the Foremen’s Club was a big success and, according to Lou Kaiser, the Club’s president, the inspiration that started the Mets on their phenomenal drive to first place in the National League pennant race.
