Williams Heads Toastmasters Club

Bob Williams, International Marketing Specialist for Vibrathane and Speciality Chemicals, has been elected President of the Preston Hill Toastmasters Club for 1980.

The club meets every other Friday at Uniroyal’s Preston Hill Inn in Oxford is dedicated to help people improve their communication and leadership skills.

“On the Road”

The Chemicals and Polymers Sales Force

An important member of the team, but often a “distant” one, is the field sales representative who is “On-the-Road”. I hope to run a series of articles about our Chemicals and Polymers sales group and tell you a little about the people and what they do.

To start with, this sales force is led by a General Sales Manager, Joe Callaghan. Reporting to Joe is a Specialty Chemicals National Sales Manager, governing Specialty Chemicals and three Regional managers covering the Rubber Chemicals and Polymers. Also reporting to Joe are two Operations Managers, Pete Cookson for Polymers, and myself for Chemicals.

The Central Office for the Midwest Region (better known as District 4) is located in Akron, Ohio, “The Rubber Capital of the World”. Out of this office, the Chemicals and Polymers field Sales Force are responsible for selling Rubber and Heavy Chemicals, ROYALENE®, PARACRIL®, Natural Latex and VIBRATHANE® Gums.

The Sales Force in the Midwest is:

Bill Galwardy Sr. Sales Associate with sales responsibilities in parts of Ohio Plus all the major Akron based Rubber Companies.

Become Hearing Experts

In the photo from left are Eric Johnson, Factory Manager, who presented the certificates; Ann McAllister RN; Patricia Grzywacz RN; and James Loman, Safety Supervisor.

Three members of the Safety and Medical Department have been awarded Certificates of Accreditation by the Council for Accreditation Occupational Hearing Conservation. The accreditation qualifies them to give industrial audiometric tests. As part of its continuing medical program the group wil give hearing tests to all employees to insure proper care of their hearing. Ann and Patricia received their certification from the University of Bridgeport and Jim from Kutztown State University, Pa. Loman is also a Certified First Aid and CPR Instructor while Pat recently received certification as a CPR Instructor.

Joe Rzeszutek recognized the need to make certain changes in the Contract in order to make the plant competitive with other chemical companies and to help improve its productivity in order to maintain job security in a highly competitive market area.

As a result of this mutual interest, Douglas reported that the parties were able to negotiate contractual changes that will provide potential improvements in productivity, reduced down-time, and cost reductions that can amount to substantial savings per year to the Naugatuck Plant. Both Douglas and Rzeszutek stated that this was the type of joint Company-Union effort that the parties are striving for in order to improve our operations, help secure jobs, and provide growth for the Naugatuck Chemical plant’s future.

Rubber and Plastic Products
Sales of Fabricated Rubber and Plastic Products were $125 million in the 4th quarter of 1978, up from $111 million in 1977.

For the year, sales were $454 million, up from $413 million in 1977. Operating income was $20.2 million, up from $15.6 million in 1977.

The operating profits of plastic products were at record levels, while hose and power transmission product sales were improved substantially over 1977.

Leisure, Sport and Other
Sales of Leisure, Sport and Other Products were $62 million compared to the 1977 quarter sales of $61 million.

For 1978, sales were $268 million compared with $289 million the previous year. Operating losses were $23.7 million, compared with a loss of $2.5 million the previous year.


Agricultural

The R&D group is supported by a marketing and sales organization of approximately 68 people in North America and 30 people in the Overseas operations.

The Agricultural Chemical Research and Development group has a staff of 34 research chemists and technicians at the Bethany Greenhouse and a group of 30 Research and Development people in Bldg. 81. Fifteen have PhD’s and nine have M.S. graduate degrees.

Sales Forecast to Triple by 1987

The sales of agricultural chemicals increased by 15% in 1978 over 1977.

Based on the existing product line the sales are expected to double by 1982. By 1987 sales are estimated to more than double again. This forecase is based on present and new products and the acquisition of new businesses that will complement the present marketing structure.

The major items on the AR include new storage tanks and scale tank systems for the necessary raw materials.

Also included will be a scrubbing system for the reactor vent stream and piping additions and changes in 124 Building. All other process vents will be directed to the building’s carbon absorption unit. These systems represent the most advanced technology in the area of pollution control. The dry product will be transported to Building 101, where it will be ground and packaged. The construction work will be done by a combination of contractors and chemical maintenance personnel. The work is scheduled to be completed in mid-1980.

Octamine…

cult and expensive due to the wax-like nature of Octamine. In fact, recently the high cost of grinding Octamine had become prohibitive.

To avoid loss of important business of this chemical an efficient means of producing Octamine powder was urgently needed. Through the expeditious efforts of Technical Manufacturing and the Chemical Maintenance people an innovative screening facility was put together to do the job. The new arrangement continuously separates a controlled fraction of fine particle material from flakes and delivers ample quantities of Octamine powder at an attractive cost.

The powder was previously made in Canada. The new system will now allow the plant to manufacture it and at a greater profit.

10 Uniroyal Scholarships Offered

Ten Uniroyal Merit scholarships will be offered to children of employees through the nationwide scholarship program of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

All children of Uniroyal employees, who have more than 5 years of continuous service as of the date of the award, are eligible for the scholarships.

Application Must Be Filed for Scholarships

Applications for the 1981 scholarships must be submitted by November 30, 1979. They can be obtained from the Industrial Relations Dept. along with a folder which gives complete details on the scholarships. Call Constance Antrum, Ext. 3217.

Students who wish to apply for a scholarship must do so during their Junior year by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests which are usually given in October by the high school. Students should check the school office for the dates of the tests.

Awards Up To $1500 Yearly

The maximum amount of the award is $1500 each year during the four years of college. The amount depends on the family’s financial circumstances and the cost of the school. The minimum amount of $250.

Omite Tops Goal by 40%

Because of the cooperation, expertise and diligent efforts of the Bldg. 100 OMITE operators, the plant achieved an exceptionally challenging goal of producing 3.9 million lbs. of OMITE for the 1979 season which ended on 8/1/79.

The diligent efforts of the Technical, Maintenance and Material Flow Depts. as well as the Pilot Plant personnel who manufacture the CHO intermediate also contributed greatly to this record. The whole plant in reality should be recognized for this accomplishment.

This was accomplished by exceeding the 1979 Productivity Standard by OVER 40% on a Y-T-D basis.

The OMITE Operators are Carl Mulonet, Larry Fortier, Joe Bednarek, Vic Kloc, Al Hyde, Dave Evon, Harry Hedrick, Joe Korzan, Orrin Huntley, Jim Reardon, Frank Maher, and Wally Parks, Foreman. Responsible for the drumming and canning of Omite were Tony Branco and Pete Shreder with the help of Sal Commendatore and Eddie Gooch. The building engineer is Bob Lambalot. The Maintenance piper assigned to this building is Dan Donato.

Operators from the Chemical Pilot Plant are Dick Fratangelo, Foreman, Tony Nunes, Harris Detlefsen, Wes Carreiro, Marty Hebert, Cas Pereira, Dan Pinto, John Lydem, Tom Casey, Chris Owens, Wayne Vaughan, Jim Morrison and Jim Pratt, Group Leader.


Gov. Grasso . . .

After the brief addresses by the guests Gov. Grasso cut the Flagship cake. Coffee and cake was served in a huge 30 ft. x 90 ft. tent which contained displays of agricultural chemicals, plastic additives, and chemical products manufactured in the plant.

The entire event was telecast on Channel 8 TV News and broadcast on WWCO, WATR, and WNVR.

75th Anniversary Committee

Arrangements and plans for the commemorative celebration were made by the 75th Anniversary Committee. The group which spent many long hours in preparation for the event consisted of Bob Breton, Ron Lak, Tony Malone, Manny Matos, Stan Mazur, Charles Roland, URW Local 308 President; Joe Reszutek, URW Local 218 President; Laurie Zitzmann, Terri Yacktis, Lynn Russell and Bill Lavelle.

A People Effort

The success of the 75th Anniversary was a total effort of the people in the plant.

The guests and visitors who attended the Anniversary celebration on Friday and the Plant Tour on Sunday, September 23 had the highest praise for the appearance of the plant and the Buildings. The celebration was an unforgettable day in the history of the Naugatuck Chemical plant. It was evident that “making it the best place to be” was a reality.

help set up in the Naugatuck plant include LVBI wet cake and Naugard 445, which are produced in the FOC plant. The Manufacture of A.O. 495 in 73 Bldg. as well as the improvement of MONEX naugatizing in 88 Bldg., involved the Chemical Process Development. ZHMA, produced in 73 Bldg. was also developed in the Chemical Process Development laboratory.

Developed Process for New Plant Products

Chemical Process Development’s involvement however does not stop there. Some products which will enter the plant in the near future include Naugacel SD-1, with an already approved AR of $614,000, and Naugard MT-ZMT. With its development nearly complete it is now awaiting capital estimates. Processes for both of these products were developed in

the Chemical Process Development Laboratory and Chemical Pilot Plant. Of course along with these existing products is Chemical Process Development’s continuous involvement in developing processes for more efficient Blowing Agent production as well as process development of other rubber chemicals, petroleum antioxidants, and plastics additives.

Group With Experience

Involvement in Geismar products is also a concern for Chemical Process Development with its contributions in the area of Thiazoles, Flexzone and Blowing Agents.

The Chemical Process Development group consists of chemists and engineers with degrees from PH.Ds to Bachelors and experience ranging from 2 years to 26 years. The members include Gary L. Arndt, Steven R. Brusso, J. Harry Donald, James D. Ferency, Robert J. Franko, James L. Pratt, Stanley E. Salva, Russell F. Sant’Angelo, and Dr. John W. Sargent.

Call Social Security Early

If you’re near retirement age, you should contact a Social Security office about 2-3 months before you plan to retire so that your monthly retirement benefits will start when you stop work.

Whether you’re planning to retire or not it is advisable to contact a Social Security office about 2-3 months before you reach 65 to make sure you will have full Medicare protection starting at 65. If you wait until your birthday month to apply, you will lose at least a month of Medicare medical insurance protection.

If you’re under age 65 and going to file for reduced benefits, you should file at least one month before you retire as your claim will be effective with the month of your application. There is no retroactivity for reduced benefits.

Bert Scullin, right, who retired some time ago was finally trapped for a photo with Factory Manager, Eric Johnson. Bert held every important job in the plant heading up Chemical Production, Reclaim Production and the Materials Flow Dept. He retired after 42 years service and was known for his loyalty to the people whom he supervised. He had a sharp Irish wit and was an excellent toastmaster.

Omite, “Growers Friend”

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous® is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership. It is self-supporting through its own contributions.

$27,025 Pledged To United Way

The United Way pledge of $27,025 was the highest amount ever made by the Uniroyal Chemical employees. The goal was $24,800. Eighty one percent of the employees contributed in the drive to raise funds to support the sixteen charitable and social Agencies in the United Way.

Research & Development people contributed $9700, the highest total, with EMIC people contributing $6200, the next highest amount.

New Customer Service Center

The Chemical Division has opened a new Customer Service Center for our plastic commodities.

Using a WATS telephone system the Customer service representatives now deal directly with our customers.

Customers’ Response Favorable

The Center was established to recieve and expedite our customer’s orders. It also provides them with quick and reliable answers to their questions concerning availability, delivery and pricing of our products. The customer’s response to the new service, has been most favorable.

New Group

The new group consists of Mariana Branco, Kralastic® ABS Representative; Lorraine Krajewski, TPR Rubber Representative; Sonya Kernasevic, Kralastic® ABS Representative; and Terri Yachtis, Roylar® & Vibrathane® Urethane Representative and Marge Maye, Kralastic ABS Representative. Ray Pekoek is Supervisor of the Customer Service Department.

Plant to Close for Two Weeks

The summer shutdown for the Naugatuck Chemical Factory will be the first two weeks of July.

The shutdown will start on July 3 and end on July 16th. The factory will reopen on Monday, July 17.

A third week shutdown is presently under review and will be announced as soon as a decision has been reached.


L.A. Tire Plant Closes

The company has announced a tentative decision to close the tire manufacturing plant in Los Angeles, Calif.

A change in market conditions and the fact that it was not economical to operate this facility necessitated the decision. The Los Angeles plant was basically designed and equipped for bias passenger tire production for sale on the West Coast, which today is primarily a radial tire market.

Approximately 550 employees are currently working in the Los Angeles plant.

The Los Angeles plant is one of six Uniroyal Tire Division plants in the United States.


Silver Dollars Awarded

Silver dollars will be awarded again this year on a monthly basis for safety performance.

Employees are separated into Divisions, such as Chemical Production, and the members of each division are broken into Groups.

If a member of a Group suffers a Reportable Injury (Serious Injury) all members of the Group are disqualified for the monthly silver dollar. If one employee in the division suffers a Chargeable (Lost Time) Injury all members are disqualified for the silver dollar.

Turkeys for Christmas

Turkeys will be given to all employees at Christmas if the Safety Goals for 1978 are achieved.

The goals are: Incidence Rate —2.52%; and Experience Rate —9.4%.

Plant Security…

Traffic Control

The last area of the program involves traffic control in the plant. The use of personal vehicles to travel in the plant is restricted. As of March 1 the Tire Gate has been closed to all vehicular traffic.

The Control Station Watchers have been issued standing orders on these and other procedures to enforce them strictly.

The purpose of these changes is in an attempt to prevent strangers from entering the plant; to control losses from it; and to improve plant safety and security.

Turning out lights saves energy. A 100-watt light bulb burning for 10 hours uses 11,600 BTU’s, which is the energy equivalent of a pound of coal or a half-pint of oil.

In 1960 he was named a Sr. Engineer in the Industrial Engineering department and was transferred to the Painesville, Ohio plant.

Returns to Naugatuck

In 1961 he was named Chief Process Engineer in Chemical Production and in 1965 became Manager of Engineering Development. He was named Materials Flow Manager in 1969. From 1972 to 1975 he was Director of European Chemical Operations.

Upon his return to the U.S. in 1975 he was named General Manager of Chemicals and Polymers.

Leisure, Sport and Other sales were $80 million compared to $74 million in 1975. These Leisure sales totalled $318 million or 14% of the Company sales as compared to $329 million in the previous year.

A Central Location

Several locations had been studied as sites for the expansion. Bldg. 47 offered the best location, being in the theoretical center of the plant in terms of people.

It is estimated that completion of the project will be 12 months after the initial work begins.

Layout and investigatory work is presently being done by the Engineering Department in conjunction with the Medical and Safety Departments.

He held a number of management positions in Sales and Marketing and was named President of the Chemical Division in 1975. He will be located in Oxford.

The three top executives in the company—David Beretta, Andrew McNeill and Joseph Flannery—are Uniroyal Chemical people who started their careers at the Naugatuck Chemical plant.

Thiazoles Unit Torn Down

Bldg. 65, an old steel framed corrugated building, located behind Bldg. 30, has been totally removed by a New Haven Wrecking Co. The building, which was constructed in 1935, was used to manufacture the Thiazoles. When the market demand for the Thiazoles exceeded the production capacity of the unit, the product was moved to the division’s newer chemical complex in Geismar, La.

Prior Named

John J. Prior has been named Superintendent of the Plant Engineering department. In his new position Prior is responsible for the Planning, Direction and Coordination of the Engineering and Maintenance activities at the Chemical plant. In addition he will have the responsibility for Engineering services at the Chemical Division’s plants in Dalton, Ga., Gastonia, N.C., Los Angeles, Calif., and Bethany, Conn.

He joined the Uniroyal Chemical plant in 1963 and held a number of supervisory Production and Engineering assignments. In 1972 he was named General Foreman of the Chemical Maintenance department.

In 1974 he was named Plant Manager of the Borough of Naugatuck’s Waste-water Treatment Plant. In 1977 the Naugatuck Treatment plant received the Connecticut Waste Water Treatment Plant Safety Award for its safety performance.

sight into the wide and diversified market use of the raw materials that are usually seen in 100 lb. cartons, 50 lb. bags or 55 gal. drums loaded on pallets ready to be shipped to all parts of the country and the world.

Few employees realized— prior to the tour—that the Naugatuck plant is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of rubber chemicals and that virtually every tire on the highway contains one of the chemicals manufactured in the plant.

Picnic at Lake Quassapaug

The picnic was held at Lake Quassapaug from 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. where a menu of steaks, hamburgers, clams, sausages, salads, draught beer were served for the entire period. Husbands and wives had the chance to “get even” in egg-throwing contests and in most games the women turned out to be the winners of the gift certificates to a local store.

Without the enthusiasm and effort of the Committee which organized the event in a short period of time, the tour-picnic would not have been such a great day.

He worked for the Philadelphia Reclaim Dispersions Co. until it was purchased by Uniroyal Chemical in 1930. Dr. Byron Hunter, a Research Associate in Research and Development, retired after 34 years service. Dr. Hunter received 38 patents, the highest in the Chemical Division. He received patents on Polygard and Antioxidant 451, which are made in the plant and Celogen RA, AZ, and OT.

in one section of the plant each year until the water flow during rainy periods is low enough in the process sewer to be handled by the pretreatment plant without it being necessary to overflow to the river. Phase I in the south chemical yard is now almost complete.

Since storm water will flow directly to the river without treatment it will become very important to keep the building roofs and yard areas free from chemical spills.

Every employee’s cooperation is needed to prevent the spills and to take quick action in cleaning them up when they so occur.

The Way to Work in 1938

New Plant in Brazil

The Company will construct a $3 million new manufacturing facility in Brazil which will produce timing belts and other power transmission products for the automotive and office equipment industries.

It is being constructed at the new Uniroyal complex in Rio Claro near Sao Paulo, and will be ready about June of 1976, and employ 70 people.

Why Wear Hard Hats?

Despite the fact that most head injuries are always serious, there are a few workers who are reluctant to wear hard hats and prevent unexpected injuries to their heads.

Every employee should take advantage of such valuable protection as the hard hat. Employees give various reasons for refusing to wear these hats. Here are a few of the common objections and reasons.

Too Heavy?

Hard hats are only a few ounces heavier than conventional headgear, but the extra big protection is worth the extra little weight. Actually, a hard hat is less than one third the weight of an Army helmet and liner.

Too Cold?

Could be, but the problem is solved by wearing a winter liner. It will keep head, neck, and ears warm without lessening the protective value.

During the past several weeks, members have been discussing possible programs with Uniroyal personnel and outside consultants. The final program is expected to be completed in the near future. In the meantime, laboratory work has already been started to find new uses for chemicals in which the division is now basic: namely, hydrazine, cyclohexene and CHO, Polywets, Dimazine and the like.

The objective will be twofold, either to market and sell the new derivatives, or to convince customers to buy more of the basic chemicals as intermediates for their own synthesis.

There are several other possibilities for future research which should yield products within the current capability of the divisions manufacturing facilities and which can be sold by its present sales organization.

It also provides for a Skilled Trades wage adjustment and Night Bonus.

Monthly Pension Increases

The monthly pension allowance was improved. The improvements are progressive over the 3 year period. By 1978, the monthly amount will be computed on the basis of $12.50 per month for every year of service.

Early Retirement

The new pension plan provides that an employee with 30 year’s service at and after age 55 can retire at his own option on an unreduced pension amount. For those employees exercising this option on May 1, 1976 and thereafter, the plan provides a supplemental allowance until age 62.

SUB Benefits

The supplemental unemployment benefits plan was also modified. The Company’s contributions will be increased from a maximum amount of 10 cents to 12 cents and the maximum funding will remain at $750. per employee under the plan.

Life insurance has been increased from $9500 to $11,500

with accidental death and dismemberment insurance increased to the same amount. Survivor income benefits (transition and bridge) were increased from $175 to $200 per month.

Medical Benefits

Improvements also were negotiated in the area of Hospital, Surgical, and In-Hospital Medical Insurance, Dental Benefits and Major Medical Plans. Also an increased allowance from $10 per day to $12.50 per day for doctors’ visits in the hospital.

Accident and Sickness

These benefits have been increased from $95 to $110 per week. In the event of layoff, coverage under the plan will still be extended for 90 days.

Benefits for Retirees

Also, certain benefits will now be extended to certain retired employees covered by the new contracts. These include those benefits in areas of survivor income and prescription drugs.

Benefits Among Finest In Industry

The negotiations, leading to the signing of the Agreements on September 5, has resulted in an overall benefits program among the finest and most comprehensive in all of industry today.


Dividend Declared

The Company declared a dividend of 12½ cents a share on the common stock payable September 25 to stockholders of record August 23.

A dividend of $2 a share on the 8% first preferred stock was also declared and was payable September 25 to stockholders of record August 23.

Letter to the Editor

In the last CHEM-TEXTS a reference was made to youth— Bill Broden and Chet Zawacki— winning over old age in the Twilight Golf Tournament finals. The statement was misleading.

Although George Baktis and I are 55 year old men, and in the twilight of our golf careers, we had to give the two youngsters 14 strokes for 9 holes.

Eligible Employees To Receive Benefits

Affected eligible employees will receive termination or pension benefits in accordance with the existing Company employee benefits programs.

There are 205 people employed at the plant, 175 of whom are members of URW Local 308. An estimated 40-45 of the Local 308 people will be retained to continue the operations in Bldg. 17 and the Synthetic Pilot Plant.

The plans do not affect the Chemical and Reclaim operations.

First Synthetic Rubber Plant in U.S.

The Synthetic Rubber plant in Naugatuck was the first to be built in the U.S. to manufacture synthetic rubber. It was constructed in 1942 during W.W. II and operated for the U.S. government to manufacture the man-made material.

URW Local 218 Names Officers

Frederick R. Mayo has been named Secretary of URW Local 218 to fill the unexpired term of Michael Rosa who resigned to take a position in Distribution and Scheduling. Mayo presently works in the Process Development laboratory. He started with Uniroyal Chemical in 1948.

David R. Cornetski has been appointed to fill the post of Treasurer, replacing Walter Scott. Cornetski joined Uniroyal Chemical in 1968 and is a member of the Rubber Compounding laboratory, TSSC.

The Twelve Steps of AA

The twelve steps of AA were written by the founder of it, Bill W. and several of the original members about one year after they had achieved sobriety. They grouped together and asked themselves, how had they conquered their drinking problem.

They realized, as they thought about it, that they had in fact gone through these twelve steps. The steps today are the foundation of the AA program.

Some AA meetings are strictly for the purpose of discussing the steps and sharing experiences about them. The steps are a way of life for the recovered alcoholic. They are the guidelines for getting sober in the first place, and for mantaining sobriety. The steps keep members of AA free of resentments and away from that “first” drink.

WE . . . admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.

2—Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3—Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4—Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5—Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6—Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7—Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8—Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9—Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10—Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11—Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12—Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Ortiz Action Averts Injury

The alert action of Herminio Ortiz, an operator in the Reclaim Mill Room, averted a serious injury to a fellow employee whose clothing was caught by a bolt on a conveyor belt and was pulling him toward the equipment.

Ortiz, working nearby, pulled the emergency switch and stopped the machine. His quick response prevented a severe injury to the employee.

Marion L. Hutt has been named Personnel Assistant and will be responsible for the administration of the benefits programs for all personnel.

Marion is also the regular proofreader for CHEM-TEXTS.

Rom Rhome has been appointed Overseas Marketing Manager for Uniroyal Chemical.


Beretta…

Beretta joined the Naugatuck Chemical plant as a process development engineer in plastics and rubber in 1953. He held several positions in polymer research and development until named Superintendent of Synthetic Production.

In 1965 he was named Factory Manager for the Naugatuck Chemical plant. He was named Vice President and General Manager of the Canadian Chemical operations in 1966.

He returned to Uniroyal Chemical as a divisional President and a Vice President of Uniroyal in 1970.

He is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Chemical Engineering.


U.S. Savings Bond Interest Increased Up to 6%

The interest rate for U.S. Savings Bonds has been increased from 5½% to 6% and the maturity period has been reduced from 5 years and 10 months to 5 years.

The increase and the new maturity period which became effective December 1, 1973, also applies to E bonds which have already been purchased.

With the new interest rate, U.S. Savings Bonds become a sound financial method to save for the college education of young children.

Industrial Engineering department and in 1964 he was named a Junior Engineer. In 1967 he moved to the Industrial Relations department as a Supervisor.

Wintsch attended Union College where he received a BA degree in Industrial Management. He continued graduate studies at RPI and received a MS degree in Engineering Management in 1967.


Oxford Girls Solve Crisis

A report in the Waterbury Republican credits secretaries at the Oxford Management and Research Center for their role in conserving heat energy.

Because of the heating system at Oxford which utilizes the heat of the body, the Center used 42% less fuel in January 1973 than in January 1972.

The article attributed part of this to “the female employees who might cause their male coworkers to generate a bit more heat than the average 500 BTUs.”

It further pointed out, “the real key to the energy saving is the heating system’s built-in capacity to recirculate old air that’s been warmed up significantly by office activity.”


CHEM-PROD JOTTINGS

by 7 BUILDING CREW

SAFETY: As you all probably know, in February we suffered our first serious accident and first lost time accident since last September. We hope this is not the start of a new trend. We’ve had an excellent record going in Chemical Production until this month.

The Monday morning meetings are continuing with some good discussions on plant conditions. We need more of this—keep up the dialogue.

PRODUCTION: Business continues at a brisk pace. Bldgs. 1, 28 and 94 will be going on 7 days soon. This will put just about every operation on 7 days for now. Raw material shortages continue to plague us and will continue to create downtime on various products. Productivity in the plant was very good in January with pounds per man hour up 15% over the 1973 average. Finishing areas are still somewhat behind.

TRASH DRUMS: Many buildings are now using tote drums as trash containers. These now cost over $10 a piece and are usually sent to the dump. There is an excess of used Leverpaks in the plant, that should be used in place of the drums. Matty Osiecki and Jesse DeSilva are coordinating this project.

AR’s: The Roylar Plant is on schedule with start-up of casting system scheduled for June 1. We should be posting for crews in early May and start class-room on-the-job training by mid-May. The compounding line is scheduled to start-up July 1.

The Octamine Flaker for #94 Building is on schedule. All existing equipment to clear up necessary space has been relocated. Delivery is expected mid-March with start-up around May-June.

The Aminox-Betanox Flaker is behind schedule. All equipment has been received but construction has been slow. We should be starting up in May.

New A.R’s being processed are for a new hazardous dryer in 101 West, Repair of 101 East Dryers, replacement of Omite Chlorosulfinate Maker and Stripper and Flexifeeders to replace Vac-U-Max in 101 East.

6 Drawings Held

As a result of the record, 6 drawings were held for 25-inch Sylvania color TV consoles—each with a value of $500—as part of the plantwide Safety Incentive Awards Program.

Two months previous 6 employees received B & W portable TV sets for the plants’ having attained 500,000 manhours without a Lost Time Accident.

Accidents Frequency—8.934;
Goals Are 12.0 And 9.0

From January 1 to June 30 employees worked 1,789,821 manhours with only 16 accidents during the 6 months compared to 33 for the same period in 1972.

The present accident frequency rate is 8.934 (the number of accidents per million manhours worked). If this frequency can be maintained for the rest of the year, two drawings for “2 Trips for 2” to Bermuda or Las Vegas; plus $500 in expense money; and one week’s pay will be held.

If the rate stays below 9.0, eligible employees will receive a 15 lb. turkey for Christmas.

Most of the accidents that did occur during the year were person-caused and could have been avoided by proper safety practices.

The present achievement indicates that Uniroyal Chemical people can be No. 1 in safety among Uniroyal plants. That’s where it belongs.

“How The AA Works”

This story was written by an employee who had a drinking problem and joined the AA. Since it is the policy of AA to remain anonymous he requested that his name be withheld from the article, the second in a series.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

The key words in the above portion of AA’s well known preamble are desire, fellowship and share. Some alcoholics would rather die than stop drinking. Many do just that, although it is often a very slow agonizing death. For some, however, a time comes in their drinking career when they have “had” it with booze. They hit a “bottom” and do genuinely have a desire to stop drinking.

Such a person will find a big surprise in AA. The room at an AA meeting is filled with people who used to be unable to control their drinking, but who now don’t drink at all. They all seem to be in a good mood. Downright happy. They welcome a newcomer without question. I have never felt more welcome anywhere than I feel when I walk into an AA meeting. It is the best experience of fellowship I have ever had.

AA members help themselves and others to stay sober happily by sharing. There is a high level of honesty in AA. This is an unusual experience for the new member after years of being a real con artist that most wet alcoholics become. The sharing is made easy because of the high level of trust you automatically feel toward the members who have welcomed you with such unquestioning acceptance. By sharing each other’s experiences while drinking and experiences while gaining sobriety in AA, the members are able to identify with each other. They can see themselves more clearly when they recognize their own experience in someone else.

Seeing ourselves more clearly is the beginning of a process of change and growth. Old resentments begin to seem less important. We come to see that what other people do to us does not have to “drive us to drink.” We can live our own lives, one day at a time, without the crutch of booze. The crutch is replaced by a new source of strength. Gradually it dawns on us that AA is a spiritual program and that the members are turning their lives and their will over to the care of God, as they understand Him, rather than to booze.

The reliance on a higher power, or God, does not come easy for the newcomer bedeviled with pride and very often resentful toward his church or religious background. For those who maintain their sobriety in AA, this higher power ultimately wins out over such pride and resentment.

This leads to a series of steps toward self improvement which builds inner strength and makes staying sober easy and a pleasure.

Sobriety is not achieved through will power but through this higher power which operates through the fellowship.

This is the power that has kept me sober for the last ten years. In another issue I will share what AA has done for me.

36 Get 25 Year Service Awards

In a presentation held in the office of Jim Cronin, Factory Manager, thirty six employees were honored for their long careers with Uniroyal Chemical. Eleven of the group were made new members of the Twenty Five Years Service Club, the others were advanced to the Forty Year, Thirty-Five Year, and Thirty Year groups.

During the past year 157 employees from the plant’s manufacturing operations joined the Twenty Five Club as new members. Membership in it is now 694 . . . roughly one half of the people at the Naugatuck location.

Less Dimples More Flight

By reducing the number of dimples from 336 to 252 and arranging them in a special pattern, Uniroyal has been able to improve the lift and trajectory of a new golf ball that has the latest high energy rubber center and the finest golf ball winding thread available.

The new Uniroyal 252 — just introduced to golf players — also breaks with. the past because of its Surlyn cover which replaces the standard balata cover and increases the ball’s durability.


Alcoholism Third Fatal Illness

Alcoholism is today one of the most disastrous illnesses in America. In fatality it is officially listed as Number 3, ranking next to heart failure and cancer.

In terms of human misery it easily ranks as Number 1, for the illness brings agony and suffering not only to the patient himself but to all who share his life, whether in family, in work associations, or in the community in which he lives.

Dreadful as unrehabilitated alcoholism is, Alcoholics Anonymous is today the most effective treatment of it. In future issues of CHEM-TEXTS the success of AA in the treatment of alcoholism will be discussed.


Tire Plant To Triple Radial Production

Uniroyal announced the start of production of steel belted radial ply tires at the Opelika, Ala. plant as part of an overall conversion program that will triple the current production rates for this new tire by the end of 1973.

In addition to the Opelika plant, the Company produces steel belted radials at the Detroit plant and in Ardmore, Okla., which is the only plant in the U.S. designed specifically for them.

With the completion of the Opelika program, Uniroyal will have invested more than $100 million for this type of tire in the U.S.

The Company has produced more steel belted radials, worldwide, than any other American tire manufacturer.

By 1977, more than 80% of the nation’s new cars and more than one-half of all replacement tires sold, will be steel belted radial ply construction.

On behalf of our Social Action Committee and everyone of our people who attended the tour of your pollution control facilities on Sunday, I offer thanks to everyone concerned. We had two excellent guides, ready with both patience and wit.

In this day so obviously concerned with pollution control, it is my opinion and that of our Social Action Committee that too often we easily condemn those who do nothing and we are mighty sparing with praise for those who do something. Paracril Production Increased

A second crew has been added to the Finishing department at the Synthetic Plant in order to run two shifts for the rest of 1973 depending on the availability of acrylonitrile. The extra crew is required to manufacture the overflow business in Paracril nitrile rubber from other division plants.

At present it is not known whether the additional Paracril business will be extended beyond the end of 1973.

Paracril is an oil resistant type of synthetic rubber and is used extensively in electrical wire and cable, fuel hose, automotive applications, and in work shoes.


Wisconsin Tire Plant Expands

The Uniroyal Tire Company, now ranked the largest supplier of steel belted radial ply passenger tires to the U.S. automotive industry will make an all-steel radial ply heavy service tire in the U.S.

A $3 million expansion program is now underway at the Eau Claire, Wisconsin tire plant to produce mono-ply steel belted radial heavy service tires primarily for tractor-trailer trucks. The plant will make 250 tires a day by the end of 1974 and if the tires are successful large scale production will start before 1976.

The expansion will create 40 jobs at the plant and add about $500,000 to the payroll.

Injuries Declined

Injuries for the months of July, August, and September of this year totaled 10 compared to 17 in the same period for 1972, showing improvement in safety performance.

The three Lost Time accidents in September, however, made it the poorest safety month during 1973.


Jobs To Be Reposted

The old job postings for positions in the new $3,000,000 Liquid Waste Pretreatment plant will be posted again on February 1, 1974 for one week. The jobs will be awarded on March 1, 1974 according to tentative plans, it was announced by Aldo Manzi, Superintendent of Engineering. Present plans indicate that 5 positions will be available in the new facility.


“What AA Has Done For Me”

This story was written by an employee who had a drinking problem and joined AA. Since it is the policy of AA to remain anonymous he requested that his name be withheld from the article, the third in a series.

For the last ten years AA has transformed my life from one of drunkenness, resentments and guilt to one of soberness, love and freedom. It feels good staying sober in AA. We stay away from that first drink one day at a time and reach the point when we wouldn’t have it any other way. I have no desire to drink anymore. I realize now that life is what we make it. We are free to choose. Everyday I choose not to drink because I know if I did I would lose that freedom. I would soon be enslaved to a bottle.

Life in AA is a lot more than just staying away from that first drink and thereby staying sober. It is a whole new way of life. The fellowship in the program is a constant reminder that we are not alone. Everywhere we go any day of the week we know there is a group of people who will accept us, understand us and help us if we need it. This is like total security.

The AA program is built on twelve steps which we go through and continue to repeat. These steps help us to grow up from helpless drunks who need a bottle to men and women who have “gotten it all together.”

For me the biggest change has been in my relationships with people. When I was drinking I used to feel a lot of hatred and hostility toward a lot of people, especially toward myself. Now I am really free of that kind of feeling. There is a lot of love and a lot of joy in my life thanks to AA.

Social Security Assistance

Employees who are planning to retire and apply for social security benefits can obtain assistance in filling out the necessary application forms by calling George Allen in the Industrial Relations department, Ext. 217.

An application for social security benefits should be filed at least three months prior to retirement so that benefit payments will begin with the effective date of retirement.

Know Your Products: Rubber Chemical Accelerators

(This issue continues the article in Vol. 5, No. 2 on Accelerators made or marketed by the Naugatuck Chemical plant.)

Accelerators are used primarily to speed up, or control the vulcanization process which turns rubber from a useless, gummy substance into a strong resilient and elastic material. Vulcanization, in simple terms, is a chemical reaction between rubber and sulfur, usually brought about by heat.

Faster Accelerators

Where there is less processing or mixing involved, very fast accelerators with little or no delayed action can be used to give more rapid vulcanization. The Zates (Arazate®, Butazate®, Ethazate® and Methazate®) and the Thiurams (Monex®, Pentex®, Tuex®, and Accelerator 108) are used here. They are also used in latex curing where processing is usually not a problem.

Customers use these accelerators for rubber sponge, wire insulation, hot water bottles, conveyor belts, hospital sheeting, and household items and in such latex products as balloons and carpet backing.

The Zates accelerators are non-discoloring and non-staining and can be used in colored rubber products.

Some of the newer synthetic rubbers (Royalene® “the crackless rubber” is an example) are inherently slower in vulcanization than the older types such as natural rubber, neoprene and the Naugapol® and Paracril® synthetic rubbers made at the Naugatuck and Painesville, Ohio plants. Fast accelerators are needed to speed up the vulcanization process for these types of rubber, otherwise it would be economically impossible to make a product at a reasonable selling price to the consumer.

Dr. Bob Brown, author of these articles, is manager of Research and Development for Rubber Chemicals. He received his doctorate degree from Princeton University in Organic Chemistry and holds several patent awards. Dr. Brown heads a staff of 42 people whose sole function is to improve our present chemicals and to develop new ones in order to remain competitive in the market.

GMF and DIBENZO GMF® are used in butyl rubber which also vulcanizes very slowly. A large amount of butyl rubber is used for tire tubes, and high voltage electrical cable.

CPB, DBA Very Active

Sometimes customers want to vulcanize rubber products without heating them at all. Very active accelerators like CPB and DBA accomplish this. In this process the product must be shaped before the accelerator is added. Golf ball covers, for example, are vulcanized by soaking the finished balls in a solution of CPB.

Of the 33 employees awarded cash for Ideas, two were salary employees and the highest number of Ideas were submitted by Mechanical Department personnel.

No Limit to Cash Awards

There is no maximum limit to the amount of a cash award for an Idea. If the value of the Idea exceeds $1,000—this amount is paid under the Plant Idea Plan—it is submitted for further consideration for a higher award to a special management committee. The minimum award for an Idea is $25.

Ideas to Conserve Water Needed

With the construction of the new liquid waste pretreatment plant in progress, ideas to conserve water are needed now as the facilities are designed to treat 3,600,000 gallons a day.

Crim Assumes IR Post

Two Industrial Relations Managers not agreeing? Unbelievable! But that’s what the photo seems to say as Jesse Crim, right, new Industrial Relations Manager for the Naugatuck Chemical plant discusses a fine point on employee relations with Ron Mitchinson, former IR Manager and now with the Corporate IR staff in Oxford. Crim came from the Chemical Division’s Painesville, Ohio plant, where he held the position of IR Manager.

Blues Conquer Yellows

The Uniroyal Chemical Touch-Football League ended its season with the “Blues” holding the “Yellows” scoreless in the Championship game, 27-0. During the regular season the Blues had a 6-0 won-lost record.

Quarterback Dan Shantz tossed 3 touchdowns to lead the Blues to the title. The Blues had a granite wall defense with the hard-charging, veteran Eric Johnson, a constant threat to the Yellow’s quarterback. The league games were umpired by Stan Mazur.

With Paul McKinstry as Captain, the Yellows had a 4-2 season. The Reds, led by Tom Geise, ended with a 2-4 record; and the Greens with Keith Hughes, suffered a 0-6 record.


Plant Ranks 69th In Uniroyal Safety

The Naugatuck Chemical plant ranks 69 among the 80 domestic and international Uniroyal plants in Lost Time and Serious Injuries.

For every 1,000,000 manhours worked (4 months) approximately 26 injuries occur among employees at the Naugatuck Chemical location.

At the Naugatuck plant there is a high concern by management and union representatives that our safety record for 1972 must improve considerably over our 1971 performance. Their joint efforts will receive top priority to improve the plant’s safety record and people’s attitudes toward it.


Seminars Scheduled

Speakers for the Technical Seminars, sponsored by the Research and Development department, have been scheduled for the first half of 1972, it was announced by Dr. Charles Crittendon, secretary for the group. The monthly meetings will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, New Haven Road, and start at 3:30 P.M.

The first speaker was Dr. Charles McCleary.

Enamait Moved To Gaylord

Bob Enamait, after almost 4 months in the intensive care unit of St. Mary’s Hospital, was moved to Gaylord Hospital, Wallingford, Conn. where he will undergo intensive physiotherapy treatments.

According to Dr. Edward Jelley, plant physician, Bob is in excellent spirits, enjoys watching TV, and talking to friends. Fellow employees are encouraged to visit him at the hospital and write to him.

A special water bed is used by him to provide him comfort during his stay at the hospital.

Retarders; Blowing Agents; Waxes

Besides the diverse line of accelerators, antioxidants and antiozontants manufactured in Chemical Production, the plant makes a number of specialty chemicals: Retarders, Process Stiffeners, Bonding Agents, Waxes and Blowing Agents.

The Retarders, ESEN and Retarder J, slow down the vulcanization of the rubber during processing. This may sound like driving a car with your foot on the brake, but when a customer is trying to mix a batch of rubber on a mill and it starts to vulcanize (harden) before he can finish processing it, he must rely on a Retarder to slow down the vulcanization.

Process Stiffener 710 is also used as a processing aid. Rubber is usually easier to handle when it is fairly soft, but some types of rubber soften so much, that they almost seem to be turning into a liquid during the processing. Stiffener 710 gives these rubbers the necessary hardness and firmness to stay sufficiently solid so they can be worked on the mill.

fine cellular structure in the finished product, expanding the product volume and lowering its density. This results in a savings in materials for the customer. Blowing Agents are used primarily in rug underlay, upholstery, fashionable footwear, boats, and electrical insulators.

The Sunproof® Waxes are used along with Flexzone® antiozontants to reduce the cracking of tire sidewalls and treads. The Waxes are mixed with the rubber on the mill and then migrate to the surface of the rubber to form a protective film against atmospheric cracking.


Plant Gets Red Cross Award

The Naugatuck Red Cross awarded Uniroyal Chemical a Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding cooperation with the Connecticut Red Cross Blood Program.

In the annual Bloodmobile sponsored by the plant Chemical and Footwear employees and walk-ins donated 214 pints of blood. Another 25 were deferred.

During the year the Naugatuck Red Cross collected 1038 pints of blood. Connecticut is one of the few states where the blood itself is free.

Organized by the Safety Dept. the successful drive was carried out by Bob Shortt, Sal Aloise, Adeline Farrar R.N., and Ann McAllister R.N.

Enamait Improved

Bob Enamait has been transferred from the intensive care unit of St. Mary’s Hospital and officially removed from the danger list.

He is now in a private room and attended by private duty nurses around the clock. He is still on a circular motorized bed and receiving physical therapy. His response to treatment is good.


Safety Sign Installed

The first Employee Safety Record sign has been installed at Main Gate. Flashing lights indicate safety record for 24 hour period.

Three new Employee Safety Record signs will be installed to keep employees posted on the plant’s safety record for this year as compared with 1970.

Flashing lights will indicate the 24 hour safety record of employees: the red signifies a Lost Time accident; yellow, a Serious Injury; and the green will indicate that employees have worked safely for a 24 hour period.

The first of the three signs has been installed at the Main entrance; the others will be constructed at the Tire Gate and the Synthetic plant.

The signs are another step in the Safety departments continuing program to improve safety awareness among employees.

Know Your Products:

Naugatuck® Chemical Antioxidants

(This is the third in a series of articles on the chemicals manufactured in Chemical Production or sold by the Chemical Division.)

If we didn’t have antioxidants and antiozonants, rubber products would fall apart, before we could wear them out.

In fact, most kinds of synthetic rubber can’t even be manufactured without some type of a protective chemical to get them through the drying and storage stages.

Polygard®, for example, is used extensively by the synthetic rubber plants as a stabilizer (antioxidant) during processing and manufacture. It is not only an excellent antioxidant but it does not discolor or stain the rubber, therefore it can be used for white and light colored rubber articles.

If the rubber is to be manufactured into a black or dark colored product (such as tires) the customer may prefer to use BLE® which discolors the rubber, but also carries its protection over into the finished product to a greater extent than Polygard.

New Chemicals Developed For Synthetic Rubbers

The newer types of synthetic rubber required new types of antioxidants to protect them against oxygen and heat degradation.

Antioxidant 451 was especial-

purpose and is used in cis-polybutadiene rubber. Antioxidant 449 was also developed for a new, and different type of synthetic rubber, EPT: Royalene® the crackless rubber, made at the Chemical Division’s Geismar, La. plant.

Chemicals Vary In Color and Protection

In the development of antioxidants there is always the problem that the chemical structure which provides the best protection against oxygen and heat also causes the worst discoloration in the rubber. Generally speaking, all antioxidants cause some degree of discoloration from a very slight yellowing to a very brownish black discoloration. Usually a chemical which discolors only slightly, gives poorer protection.

Antioxidant 431 (VCIU) is such a chemical. It gives the best color but less protection against oxygen and heat.

Naugawhite® Antioxidant 439 and Antioxidant 451 are a little further down the color scale, but are somewhat more effective as antioxidants. These chemicals are used in latex foam, footwear and household products which are usually made from a bright color rubber.

Disaster Plan Operates

A few minutes after the explosion members of the Disaster Plan arrived at the plant and assumed their responsibilities during the emergency. One evidence of the Plan’s effectiveness was the swift medical attention provided the injured employee—he was receiving medical care by a team of specialists at St. Mary’s Hospital ten minutes after the accident.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

Other Accidents In Period

Other injuries during the 8 week period were: one employee suffered partial loss of a finger; an employee cut his hand with a knife requiring ten stitches; another employee dropped a valve on his foot and broke a toe; an employee injured his eye when a flying chip struck his eyeball; two employees suffered severe burns from steaming hot water and a steam hose; and another employee broke an ankle when a ladder slipped and he fell off it backwards.

The URW Local 218 of the Chemical plant held its fourth annual picnic at Lake Quassapaug. Sponsored by the Union during the summer, the picnic gave members in different departments of the plant an opportunity to meet new members, people on different shifts and brings back a number of retirees to reminisce about the “good old days”. The success of the affair was attributed to the months of planning by Frank Commendatore, Chairman, and members of the Picnic Committee: Frank Wasilesky and John Lengyel.

Activities started at 1 P.M. with charcoal broiled hamburgers and cold refreshments. Steaks and corn were served at 5 P.M.


Tutors Needed For Program

The Uniroyal Tutoring Program, now in its second year, needs additional tutors to expand its activities to the Puerto Rican young people in Waterbury.

The program provides personal instruction to youngsters to help them become better achievers in school, obtain a High School diploma and continue their education.

Forty eight Uniroyal Chemical employees tutor on Monday evening from 7 to 9 P.M. at the Sisters of Charity’s tenement house on Gilbert St.; and at the Woodrow Wilson School on Tuesdays.

Golf League End Season

The Uniroyal Synthetic Golf League ended the season with Hank Drummer and Dan Petti taking first place honors with John Muckle and Jack Painter runnerups.

Suffering a sudden death playoff defeat last summer, Drummer and Petti showed fine short iron play, classic drive shots and good putting to take this year’s title.


Enamait Family Thanks Employees

Bob and Joan Enamait extend their sincerest thanks to employees for the $1,271 which was presented to the Enamait family recently.

Bob Enamait was seriously injured in the Chemical Pilot plant when a 20 gallon reactor exploded. He has been hospitalized with third degree burns since Aug. 17 in St. Mary’s Hospital.

Know Your Products: Rubber Chemical Accelerators

Uniroyal Chemical manufactures 91 different types of chemicals for rubber, latex and plastic products. 69 of these chemicals are manufactured and sold by the Naugatuck plant; the others are made at the Geismar plant in Louisiana.

Virtually every tire on the road today contains one of the chemicals made by the Chemical Division to protect them against oxygen, ozone, heat, fatigue and sunlight. Without these chemicals the rubber would deteriorate rapidly.

Coincidentally, it was one of our rubber chemicals that established us in the agricultural chemical business when it was discovered that the chemical had fungicidal properties. Twenty-five years later, the Division ranks as a major manufacturer of herbicides; growth regulants, miticides and fungicides.

The chemicals that we make at Naugatuck for the rubber industry do a wide variety of jobs; but two are by far the most important. These are: 1) Accelerators for vulcanization and 2) Antioxidants and Antiozonants for protection against aging. A third group—Others—include Blowing Agents for rubber and latex sponge; Bonding rubber to fabric; and Retarding vulcanization during processing.

Accelerators

Ever since 1844 when Charles Goodyear, in his small plant in Naugatuck, found that heating rubber with sulfur (vulcanization) causes it to change from an almost useless, gummy solid to a strong, resilient material with hundreds of uses, rubber product manufacturers have been looking for ways to do this job faster and better.

Chemicals which speed up this vulcanization reaction are called accelerators.

Delayed Action Accelerators

MBT and its derivatives (MBTS, OXAF, DELAC®-S) are the work horses of the rubber industry. They are used in almost all tires, footwear, wire and cable and in many other products where strength and long life are needed but where there is also a lot of milling and shaping of the rubber before it is finally made into a product.

in his face and would have burned his eyes if he had not been wearing his safety glasses.

Tony DaSilva, an operator in Chemical Production, was sprayed with sodium MBT when a plugged line broke. The chemical covered his face, arms and chest. His safety glasses averted serious injury to his eyes.

During the first four months of the year, 57 eye injuries took place. Fortunately most employees were wearing safety glasses at the time of the accidents, preventing serious damage to their eyes.

$150,507 Lost In 1970

In 1970 there were 6 lost time accidents and 66 serious injuries. The cost of medical bills and Workmen’s Compensation for the year totalled $150,507, an amount equivalent to $100 per employee.

223 employees suffered eye and head injuries in the same year. Of these, 170 were eye injuries and 53 were head injuries.

For your personal safety, your fellow employees, and for your family’s sake, wear your safety glasses and hard hats on the job in designated areas.

Once an eye is lost, it can never be replaced.

The Footwear business also showed progress during the first quarter.

Chemical Sales Down

“A major trouble spot at the present time,” according to Mr. Vila, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors, “is in our domestic chemical operations where severe price erosion in many product lines has resulted in a sharp drop in earnings. This has been caused, in part, by competition from foreign sources, in part by the expiration of certain patents and, in part, by a drop in demand for chemical products generally.”

A Worldwide Competitive Manufacturing Complex

The heavy capital investment made by the Company in recent years now gives it a worldwide manufacturing complex which, for the most part, is modern and fully comparable with competition.

Present manufacturing facilities are sufficient to give the Company sales of about $2 billion, an increase of approximately 20% over present sales levels.

This processing has to be done at a high temperature to make the rubber soft enough to handle, and there is always the danger that it will start to vulcanize before it is finished. For this reason, customers want the accelerators that have some “delayed action”. MBT has a little delayed action; MBTS has more; and DELAC-S has the most.

As State environmental laws and enforcement become more strict, it will be essential to control and reduce the flow of materials into the plant drains.

$4,900,000 Spent, Committed

The new facilities, including the financial commitment to the Borough and the scale model pilot plant tests, will cost $4,900,000, exclusive of the operating costs.

Little of the costs expended to date have been absorbed by increased product prices to customers but have been borne mainly by the plant.

The completion of the facilities is scheduled for December 1972 in compliance with orders from the State Water Resources Commission

New Duster Cleans Air

The production of various types of Naugapol® rubber requires talc to be applied to the rubber bale before it is packaged. The talc, a very fine particle size, is dusted on manually, and creates a dust problem when the operator applies it to the rubber. The operators were exposed to the talc and had been required to wear masks to avoid inhalation of the dust.

Air sample tests in the area indicated that the dust levels in the atmosphere were within acceptable health requirements. However, it was decided that an improvement in the ventilation system would make the area more conducive to healthier and safer work conditions for the men in the building.

To eliminate the dust problem, a talc station table and hood was redesigned and a larger fan was installed to provide greater air flow across the talc station. The dust laden air is then lead to a cyclone where it is collected and clean air enters the atmosphere.

With the improved ventilation, it is no longer required to wear a mask when the talc is applied to the rubber.


Plumes Not Pollutants

On clear cold days the white plumes from the plant are more prominent. Most of the “white stuff” is harmless water vapor resulting from the condensation of steam after it has performed its necessary function in providing heat for the 140 buildings in the plant’s production operations and offices. Lou Kaiser of the Environmental Control Group is presently analyzing all vents and stacks in the plant for pollutant content as part of an air environmental improvement program.


$20,050 Pledged To United Givers

Generous concern for people by Uniroyal Chemical employees was again shown with a pledge of $20,050 to the United Givers which benefits the physically handicapped, mentally retarded, broken homes, the young and the old in the communities around us.

The amount represents one-sixth of the total pledges for the Naugatuck-Beacon Falls 1971 Drive.

965 out of 1,500 employees contributed with 662 using the payroll deduction plan.

The highest pledges were $240; $228; $204; $160; with several in the $120 range.

EMIC pledged $4,410 for the highest department contribution, surpassing last year’s goal by $1,000. Several departments dropped below their contributions of 1970 which account for attaining only 91% of the $22,000 plant goal

Scholarship Offered

The Uniroyal Chemical Management Club is again offering a $250 scholarship, which is available to a son or daughter of a Chemical division employee with two or more years’ of service.

The scholarship is open to all students in the graduating class of a high school or preparatory school who plan a college education. Applications can be obtained from the Industrial Relations department.

This year the scholarship will again be augmented by a $50 cash endowment from Larry Monroe, a retired Chemical division employee.

Joe Bucciaglia is Chairman of the Scholarship committee and all applications must be mailed or returned to him on or before April 1, 1971.


Hoist Taken From TSSC

A quarter ton electric hoist, valued at $500 was recently taken from the Plastics Compounding Lab. in TSSC (Bldg. 112). The 100 lb. hoist, attached to an overhead rail, required a ladder and two men to remove.

Thefts of an electric drill, wrenches and small tools have also been reported in the same building.

Besides the extra cost to the plant, the thefts cast suspicion on all employees in the building, and new rules are effected to restrict their actions because of an individual’s actions.

The loss imposes harder work conditions on the men who now have to use a hoist from another section of the building.


CHIF Offers Help To Find Homes

25 Year Club Holds Dinner

The 25 Year Club will hold a dinner at the Waverly Inn in Cheshire on Friday evening, March 20, at 6 P.M.

Employees with 25 years service and more, both active and retired, are invited to attend the dinner as guests of Uniroyal Chemical.

Forty eight new members will be initiated into the 25 Year Club at this year’s dinner. Presently there are 568 members in the club which honors employees for their loyal and long years of service.

1970 Success . . .

The design and construction of the new pretreatment waste water facility as part of the plant’s environmental program to control pollution of the Naugatuck river will be undertaken during 1970.

A plan has been initiated to study the causes of air pollution by buildings to determine methods to control the discharge of dust and odors into the air.

Materials Handling

Redesigned and standardized packages will improve the package appearance of our products. But these improvements will be wasted unless extra caution is taken during the filling, handling and shipping operation to ship neat, clean packages to our customers to stop customer complaints about our packages.

Damaged drums, dirty packages and dented cans can result in returned shipments and costly repackaging which affects our sales and profits.

Warehousing and trucking costs will be studied to give our customers faster and better service.

A clean plant and building is a good place to work and only good housekeeping practices by every person in their work and locker areas can attain this goal.

Purchasing

This group will continue the implementation of chemical and synthetic raw materials’ orders and inventory control by electronic data processing (EDP) to obtain material at the lowest cost and to provide the necessary materials on time for production operations.

The testing program on can liners for agricultural chemicals will be continued to give our customers quality products in the best packages.

Industrial Relations

Training programs will be conducted for foremen and supervisors; and a new orientation program for new employees will be given when they are hired.

Cafeteria and food services throughout the plant will be studied to improve service, particularly the hot food service in the vending machines.

A Contact and Evaluation program for salaried employees has started and every employee will be interviewed on a two level basis.

To keep employees informed on plant news and plans, the plant paper Chem-Texts, and News Bulletins will be issued on a regular basis.

Industrial Engineering

The red tape and delays in reviewing ideas will be eliminated under the new Idea Plan. Prompt attention will be given to all ideas submitted by all employees.

Social Security Upped 15%

The 15% increase in Social Security benefits affects everything from a retiree’s monthly check to the benefit paid a 40 year-old widow with small children. The extra benefit starts in April with two checks covering all the increases since Jan. 1.

A person who paid the maximum tax and retires at 65 in 1970 gets $190 a month – up form $165. He gets 80% if he retires at 62; 86-2/3% at 63; and 93-1/3% at 64.

His wife, age 65, gets 50% of her husband’s benefits, or $95. She can get $71.25 at 62. When her husband dies, she receives 82½ % of his post 65 benefit, $157 for life.

Applications for social security should be made 3 to 4 months before retirement to receive benefits upon retirement and to avoid delays.

The Social Security office in Waterbury or New Haven will gladly answer questions pertaining to your benefits.

Safety procedures are an important part of safety and fire prevention. Knowledge of operation of the equipment, location of shut-off valves, and the location of fire alarm boxes, showers, eye fountains, and other safety equipment prevents accidents and injuries and makes the plant a safer place to work for all of us.


Better Food Service Promised

At a recent meeting, representatives of Industrial Vendors, Inc. (IVI) who service the plant’s food facilities, stated that every effort would be made to improve the food and vending machine service in the plant.

The meeting stemmed from employee complaints about the condition and quality of food as well as the lack of food in the machines on the night shifts and weekends, and poor servicing of the machines. A lack of variety in Cafeteria menus was another comment often mentioned by employees about the service.

It is a major concern of the plant to assure fresh quality food for employees on all shifts. The meeting should result in improved food services throughout the plant.


$16,900 Invested In Each Employee

Each year Uniroyal increases its investment in new and better equipment to improve production, work conditions and to make jobs easier.

Today each employee is backed by $16,900 in plants, tools and equipment. Ten years ago the figure was $10,400.

During the past year, several millions of dollars were spent on plant improvements, new equipment, new machinery, modernization programs, safety, and new product facilities. This investment helps us remain competitive in the chemical industry by selling our products to customers at a competitive price and protects job security.

loss of an eye, or the permanent disability to an individual. His family shares his anguish with him, and in the case of total blindness, a severe hardship is placed on the family. His lost earnings affects their livelihood, their opportunities for a college education and the many good things that make life more enjoyable.

Every employee in the plant is hurt by the lost skill and experience of an injured employee. An entire production line may be shut down by his absence. Operating costs are increased and the job security of his fellow employees endangered.

What Can You Do?

Observe every safety rule. Don’t perform unsafe acts. Don’t take “the chance”. Think before you act. Expect the unexpected happening.

These are the things you can do for your safety and the safety of your fellow employee. Often he’s the one who gets hurt by the chance you take.


U.S. Census Now Underway

The nineteenth decennial census will be different in its procedure from any ever taken in the U.S.

Each household will receive a questionnaire in the mail and most will be asked to return it by mail, except in rural areas where a census taker will call for them. •

One out of 5 households will receive a longer form with additional questions about each member in the household and the dwelling.

The success of the new mail system depends in a large degree on the cooperation of the public.

The Census determines the official population figures for the U.S., states, counties, cities, towns and villages.

The Census which is strictly confidential provides data on income, housing, occupations, education, poverty, age, color, sexes and other important information on the U.S. population.

Prize Cattle Raised at Oxford

per Ernie Scheller

Filet mignon. Sirloin steak. Prime rib beef. These choice meat cuts may soon appear on the menu of the Synthetic plant cafeteria.

Twenty-six pure bred polled (born without horns) Hereford calves are being raised at the Oxford Project. Recently, Ernie Scheller, Superintendent of Uniroyal Farms weighed the calves and they surpassed the Maryland average beef weight for calves. The 26 calves averaged 440 lbs. per animal which is above average for their age.

Beau Perfect, Sire

The goal of the Oxford Farm is to develop a top breeding herd for prize showing and choice table beef, and to produce the best herd of cattle in the country.

Beau Perfect is owned jointly with the University of Maryland. Beau Perfect is stretchy, muscular, and off-the-ground, all essential for a top sire according to Scheller.

Our other herd sire, Pawnee Domino, has also shown promise and we have high hopes for his offspring.

Top Man In U.S.

As manager of Tranquility Farms, Ernie had the highest milk production in the country for 50-100 cows’ class. Each cow in the herd produced 19,213 lbs. of milk which is an exceptionally high production rate for this number of cows. Ernie received national fame for his records; and his outstanding achievements in the cattle industry were featured in newspapers and magazines.


Friend Of Eisenhower and Senator Gore

Ernie was a guest of President Eisenhower at his Gettysburg Farm in Pennsylvania. The former President had sought Ernie’s advice on improving his milk herd.

He is a friend of Senator Gore of Tennessee whom he has met at several beef sales

“Got to eat as well as the herd” Earnie said as he helped himself to a healthy dish of spaghetti.

and has been invited by the Senator to visit his farm where he raises beef cattle.

Raised In Orphanage

Born in New Haven, Ernie was raised at the Warburg Orphan Farm School, where he met his wife, Elizabeth. “I didn’t like him at all” she said, “while we were at the orphanage. But, I met him many years later at a friend’s home, and a year later married him”.

At the Farm School, Ernie only 17 years old assumed full charge of the farm operations. After he left Warburg, he became manager of several


top farms in the Connecticut area.

Reports To New York

Scheller works under Norman Gouldin, Managing Director of Uniroyal’s Rubber Plantation division. He makes periodic trips to “1230” to report on the status of the herd and the farm. Like all managers, Ernie has a budget and must account for the expenditures and the finances of the operation. Head of the Oxford Project is Bill Norton, who once held the position of Controller at the Naugatuck plant.

Like our own plant, the company is deeply concerned about safety. Accidents do not happen. They are caused by someone who is careless, and who cares less than he should about his own safety and that of his fellow employees.

tem eliminated the discharge of 34,000 lbs. of fiber to the river daily.

Air Pollution Control

A major improvement in cleaner air resulted from the conversion of the boiler house from coal to oil firing. This $500,000 facility stopped the discharge of 2½ tons of flyash into the air each day. The conversion also eliminated the need for cooling cinders which caused pollution of the river.

At a cost of $510,000, cyclones, Holoflite dryers, and a digester blowdown condensing system were installed to reduce pollution of the air from lint and evaporated oil caused by the reclaim plant.

Scrubbers Control Odors

Seven scrubbers are now in operation in plant buildings to “wash” the fumes and odors created by processing operations. Ranging in cost from $2,000 to $70,000, some of the complex systems prevent the discharge of phenolic, mercaptans, formaldehyde and hydrochloric fumes into the atmosphere.

Two new scrubbers are now on order and will be installed when delivered.

Groups Study Problems

Immediate remedial action is being taken by an

Environmental Improvement Group under Dick Shaw and Lou Kaiser and a special Research and Development group, headed by Irwin Prager, to reduce pollution by process changes in present manufacturing operations and to coordinate our research resources toward the use of effective control systems in new facilities.

New process equipment will contain pollution control devices and systems, and special monitoring systems installed for proper performance of pollution control equipment.

Every Employee Can Help

Improving the environment is too great a task for it to be the responsibility of any one functional group or department. For the most effective environmental improvement program it requires the active committment of every employee in the plant, laboratories and offices. Even the most advanced equipment will be useless unless it is operated efficiently by the individuals responsible for it.

Program Set Up

Recognizing each persons responsibility, plans are underway for a pollution control program to set up discussion groups and training sessions to help us improve our environmental quality efforts.

Still Have Problems

The Chemical plant still has problems, particularly in the area of fumes and odors. Environmental air improvement is a complex problem that requires a study of each source of pollution from the hundreds of vents on the 142 buildings of the plant.

As part of the plant’s commitment to environmental improvement the problems of fumes and odor are being resolved with action and the financial requirements needed to do the job.


Watts, Lokites Retire

Buddy Watts, center, tells the younger generation John Clinton left and Tom Haggerty what the Chemical plant looked like when he started work in 1926. “One of the best liked fellows” around here was the compliment fellow employees said about him when he retired after nearly 44 years service.

Explorers Tour Reclaim Plant

High School students, members of Explorers Post 103, which is one of several youth activities sponsored by Uniroyal Chemical, toured the reclaim plant where they had the chance to explore the manufacturing operations used to convert discarded tires and tubes into a finished rubber product. Guides for the tour were Art Nauges, Jim Carroll and Bert Scullin.

The Explorers offer your son or daughter the opportunity to learn about the many careers available to them in chemistry, engineering, agriculture, and business through discussion and practical learning.

Chemical Highest Taxpayer

The Borough of Naugatuck’s list of assessment valuations shows Uniroyal Chemical as the highest taxpayer in the community, being taxed at $13,500,000. This represents 12.5% of the Borough’s tax revenue.

The Footwear plant pays $8,600,000 or 8.0% of the taxes.

The total tax of the two Uniroyal plants is $22,100,000 or 20.5% the Borough receives in taxes from the two facilities.

Safety Goal Stops At 650,000 Hours

The safety goal of 1,000,000 manhours was stopped at 650,000 manhours. A chemical production operator lost a small portion of his right ring finger when it was caught under the belt on the drive on a crusher machine. Quick action by him prevented a more serious loss to his other fingers and hand.

The accident was the first lost time one in almost 3 months. It was another case of the unexpected happening. As a result of it, the man suffered an unnecessary loss of a finger.

Lost Time Accidents Drop

This was the third lost time accident for six months of 1970, a significant improvement over 1969 when 12 lost time accidents occurred. This improved concern for the safety of ourselves and other people makes the plant a better, safer place to work.

Serious Injuries Up

Although lost time accidents dropped, serious injuries increased from 28 in 1969 to 33 for the six months of 1970. In June there were 4 serious injuries: 2 lacerations; 1 bruised elbow; and a pulled muscle. These injuries could have been lost time accidents but luck helped, and the employees involved escaped greater injury. Serious injuries can be stopped by not taking chances on the job and checking work conditions carefully.

Unsafe acts—and this was certainly one, because someone carelessly left the stake on the lawn—can result in a fatal injury to a member of your own family at a time when most unexpected.


Wear It Once (Cont’d. from page 1) made with latex. This year’s sales of paper dresses and other nonwoven apparel will hit $35 million.

Disposable paper diapers are a large market for latex with annual sales climbing to over a billion diapers a year by 1975.

Women’s dresses, bathing suits, beach robes, sport jackets, aprons, wedding gowns, and Kleenex tissues make up a large part of the “throw away” disposable market.

Carpets Big Market

Another major use for Naugatex latex is carpets, where the latex is used to hold the tufted yarn firmly to the jute backing and prevent it from tearing and ripping. Foam latex makes an excellent underlay giving the carpet a luxurious feel and longer wear life.

Paper; Other Markets

Magazines and books are coated with latex to hold the ink on the paper, preventing its absorption into the paper. Latex coated paper improves the reproduction of photographs, and gives a sharpness to the printing for easier reading.

When latex is mixed with the paper, it makes a tough cover for books, giving the book longer life. This use is finding wide acceptance in school textbooks.

Competitive Business

The latex business is a highly competitive business where quality, packaging, delivery, and price are important factors in keeping customers.

Whether at home or work, it’s a good practice to wear safety shoes and safety glasses as protection against such incidents.

A lawnmower can pick up stones, pieces of glass or wire, cans or toys and hurl them at speeds as high as 170 miles an hour-bullet speed.


Competing for the same customers are large progressive chemical companies such as Dow, International Latex, Goodyear, Firestone, Goodrich, General, Vanderbilt, Shell and a number of other companies.

Chemicals For Latex

Latex, which consists of tiny particles of rubber suspended in water, requires special chemicals to protect it from oxygen, heat, sunlight, and weather. Without this chemical protection, the latex would deteriorate during processing or discolor from exposure to atmospheric conditions.

Future Growth

A substantial drop in automobile sales, fewer housing starts and an overall economic slack have hurt latex sales, as well as other areas of the plant’s production. Latex sales for the division and the synthetic plant are projected at a fairly substantial growth for the next 5 years.

To keep this business at the Synthetic plant and share in its growth requires producing the highest quality latex at the lowest cost, and giving our customers better service than the competitors.

Sales and profits of the tire and international operations showed strong gains during the six months. However, these gains were offset by declines in chemicals and plastic products due to lower automotive production.

SAL LANTIERE retired with 24 years service. Sal held the position of a mill and calender operator in the plastics compounding laboratory at TSSC where he worked on Kralastic® ABS, the steel-like plastic used in automobiles, appliances, boats, and pipe.

ED SLOMCENSKI, retired recently as a mill and calender operator in the rubber compounding laboratory at TSSC where he tested the properties of new types of synthetic rubber developed by the research and development department.

KEN JARRETT who started with Uniroyal Chemical in 1945 as a laboratory assistant in Dispersions research and development, retired after more than 24 years service, all spent at the Naugatuck location.

Electrical Power Improved

With the construction of the new Connecticut Light and Power Co. sub-station nearer the plant with larger current carrying capacity, voltage variations will be minimized in the plant, TSSC, EMIC, buildings. The possibility of interference with the plant’s electrical power and equipment will be reduced considerably with the new power source.

The new line feeding electrical power to the Naugatuck location has less exposure to electrical faults, as one third of it was installed underground in the Synthetic parking lot.

Previously the plant received its electrical power from the sub-station in Beacon Falls.

accurately plan the movement of materials through their buildings.

By checking the Lab data on in-process material, the drying and grinding of off-spec products, still in the manufacturing process, can be eliminated and the extra cost of reworking an off-spec product saved.

Priority System

One of the biggest hangups in production can be mechanical or equipment failure, but by establishing a product priority system for mechanical repairs the most important products can be kept running. Tom Dowling coordinates all mechanical activity with Clayt Houseknecht and Leo Napiello, and when necessary will request mechanical overtime, especially if the product has a “top” priority in terms of customer needs.

By keeping accurate records on production and finishing, a department is kept up to date on its performance against its schedule and if called for, changes are more easily made in the schedule to meet customer demands.

Accurate monitoring of raw material receipts and month end inventory reports have eliminated errors and resulted in dollar savings.

Center’s Staff

In charge of scheduling and coordinating with the D/S department is Matty Mathewson, with Francis Egan coordinating the purchase of all raw materials with the Purchasing department to insure sufficient inventory of materials for operation of the plant. Clark Makinson, in charge of the computer program for the Center, is now mapping out a


Synthetic “B” Crew Hits Goal

Getting a quality latex to the customer on time that meets his demands in a highly competitive market is no easy job but the Synthetic “B” crew achieved a production goal of 8 charged batches of latex a shift for an entire month.

The latex market has slumped considerably the past twelve months due to a drop in the carpet industry, so every pound of latex business is needed to keep the plant operating on a full schedule.

Efficient, steady production of a quality Naugatex latex, is a major step towards improvement of our competitive position, in keeping manufacturing costs down; and keeping our customers satisfied.

Reaching this goal required the full effort of all crews and in this case, the “A” and “C” contributed significantly to the “B” crew’s achievement of its month long goal.

you must be: 1) a former member of a school class which has graduated from high school; 2) at least 18 years old; 3) a Connecticut resident for 6 months just prior to the examination; 4) out of full-time day high school one academic year.

Subjects In Test

In the tests, emphasis is placed on your intellectual power rather than detail content and on your ability to understand, evaluate, and to think clearly. Five subject areas are covered in the tests: Grammar; Social Studies; Natural Science; Literature; and Mathematics.

Exam Brush Up

Many, out of school for several years, are overly concerned about being prepared to take the examination. For an individual who needs only a “slight brush-up”, several books are available in bookstores. Many schools have adult education courses to prepare you for the tests.

How To Apply

An application must be filled out in person before a designated official in your local school system.

The exam is given every month (except July or August) on the 2nd and 3rd Saturday of the month at Waterbury State Technical College for people in this area.

A $3 fee is charged applicants. No fee is required for veterans with an honorable discharge, for either the exam or the diploma.

Employees To Take Tests

John Needham passed the test in June with high marks after several years in the service and a little homework.

Jesse Silva will take the test in September. Clarence Jackson plans to take it after a short review of the subjects.

New Products Promising

The Chemical Division has many promising products for the future. Royalene® is used in practically all white tire sidewalls, and it could become an even bigger factor in tires. Solo®, Dyanap®, and Omite® showed good growth in 1970. Telephones and many of your home appliances are made of Kralastic® ABS plastic. 25% of the houses built today in the United States have Kralastic drain, waste and vent piping.

Although some of these products are made at other Chemical division plants, their sales growth is important to the Naugatuck plant which manufactures many of the chemicals used in these products.

Cooperative Effort Needed

Markets for our products will grow as long as we satisfy our customers; meet our competition; and produce quality products at the lowest possible cost.

The Marketing and Sales Department are constantly seeking new customers and developing new markets for our products. With the continued cooperation of Research & Development; the Plant’s production capabilities and the Sales department, we can stay ahead of competition.

$21,000 Contributed to United Givers

$21,000 in pledges were made by Uniroyal Chemical employees to the United Givers fund drive. This is the second successive year that Uniroyal Chemical topped $20,000 to support the 16 charitable, social work, and youth organizations in the fund which in some way touch the lives of every employee or his family.

One Third Of All Firms

The plant’s contributions represent almost one-third of the Industrial division’s goal of $65,000. The success of this year’s campaign reflects the vital concern and involvement of employees in community problems and activities by helping the mentally retarded, children with cerebral palsy, the free blood programs of the Red Cross and the many youth organizations in the Fund.

Four Departments Top Their Goals

Reclaim Production, under the Chairmanship of Bob Foltz, Joe Rzeszutek and Pat Tortorici; Synthetic Production under Chairmanship of Leon Raskauskas, Archie Civitello and Carl Wehmann; Engineering under Vic Anderson as Chairman; and Materials Handling with Hank Lynch, Chairman.

Exceeding last year’s pledges were Chemical Production, Factory Services, Research and Development, and the Accounting Department.

Research and Development contributed the highest amount $5,878, with the Division’s offices contributing $2,841. Every group deserves commendation for their generous support of the drive through the payroll deduction plan and “give where you work”.

More than 1,100 employees participated in the drive with 404 not participating for various reasons. The average pledge of contributors came close to $20 which is one of the highest of any company in Naugatuck and Beacon Falls. While individual contributions varied, some people pledged a $1.00 a week and some contributed $200 annually.


Close Doors, And Windows At Night

With cold weather here and long weekend shutdowns due to the season holidays, foremen, supervisors, and employees of different departments should make sure doors and windows are closed, especially during nights and weekends, to preserve heat in the buildings and prevent freezing of the sprinkler systems.


Chairmen Do Good Job

The success of the campaign was undoubtedly due to the generous spirit of employees, but a good amount of credit belongs to the committee which organized the drive and did the canvassing. The Executive Committee for the drive was Eric Johnson, Chairman, Roger Amidon, Vic Anderson, Joe Bucciaglia, Bob Foltz, Gene Hertel, Frank Lynch, Milt Makoski, Leon Raskauskas, Joe Rzeszutek and Jack Vergosen.

Chairman of the plant sections and departments were Mike Dodd, Bob Grahame, Al Juliano, Paul Laurenzi, Roger Lestage, Stan Mazur, Phil Morin, Doug Ritchie, Sal Sapio, Dom Scalzo, Pat Tortorici, Mary Vergosen, and Carl Wehmann.

During the day windows and doors are often opened particularly if weather suddenly becomes warm, and are left opened during the night when the temperature drops below freezing. This causes freezing of the sprinklers which results in breakage and water discharge. As a result, not only is equipment and material damaged, production stopped, but cleanup operations are involved as well as a shutdown of vital sprinkler protection against fire for the plant’s safety.

Pollution of Naugatuck River To Be Controlled

Naugatuck river at the south end of the plant. They will consist of waste collection pipe lines, pumping stations, neutralizing facilities and coagulating – settling basins.

Operations Building And Laboratory

A two story operations building will be constructed for storing and adding waste water treatment chemicals. A laboratory will be included in the building where control analyses will be made to insure that the wastes are pretreated properly for acceptance into the Borough’s water pollution control facility.

Completion Scheduled For April 1972

Completion of construction is scheduled for April 1972 in compliance with orders from the State Water Resources Commission.

The pre-treatment plant is based on extensive laboratory and pilot plant work which has been conducted at the Chemical plant for the past four years at a cost of more than $300,000.

safety both on and off the job. When working or walking outside, watch out for icy patches to prevent slips and falls which may result in serious injuries. Every effort will be made by the Materials department to keep areas sanded but its virtually impossible to sand every spot in the plant.

It’s every employees responsibility to sand an icy area or to report ice or hazardous conditions to his foreman or supervisor who will contact the Materials department to correct the situation.

Major Step In Pollution Control

The Naugatuck River south of Thomaston has been assigned a C classification by the State Water Resources Commission. Class C is defined as “suitable for fish and wildlife habitat, recreational boating and industrial process and cooling”.

The waste water pre-treatment plant is designed to control water pollution consistent with the State requirements for Class C waters.

This water pollution control facility is part of the long range program for improving the quality of the nation’s rivers and lakes.

Sales Set Record; Profits Drop 10.5%

Sales of Uniroyal, Inc. set new records for the thirty-nine weeks ending September 28, 1969, but profits failed to keep pace with sales, and took a 10.5% drop.

Sales for the nine month period totaled $1,165,502,000, an increase of 9.9% compared with $1,060,659,000 reported for 1968. Profits, however, were $38,184,000, equivalent to $1.33 a share of common stock, 10.5% lower than the $42,650,000 or $1.55 a share for 1968.

The third quarter sales for 1969 were $368,869,000 compared to $341,874,000 for 1968 and net income was $8,292,000 equivalent to 27 cents a common share compared with $12,769,000 or 45 cents a share last year. Third quarter earnings in 1969 were based on a greater number of shares outstanding.

Profits were hurt by increasing inflationary factors, including rising costs for wages and raw materials, as well as higher interest rates on borrowed capital.

The Company also encountered abnormally high production costs for new tire constructions and greater start-up expenses for new and expanded production facilities.


Contact Lenses Are Unsafe

Many employees are not fully aware of the dangers in wearing contact lenses in the plant.

Chemicals and dusts which enter the eye and work their way behind the lens cannot be washed out until the lens is removed. Very often permanent damage to the eye can result before this can be done.

There is a rule which is included in the Laboratory Safety Manual stating, Contact Lenses are not to be worn in the plant. For your own safety and to prevent injury to eyesight, it is extremely important to observe this rule.


Dividend Declared

Uniroyal declared a dividend of 17½ cents a share on its common stock. It will be payable December 24 to stockholders of record on November 24.

This payment will bring total dividends paid on the stock in 1969 to 70 cents a share.

Approximately 65% of the Naugatuck plant employees are stockholders or participants in the Stock Purchase Plan.

Chemical Royals Win Softball Title

The Chemical Royals took first place in the Naugatuck News Twilight League National Division, winning the first half championship easily but facing a tough task in the second half when they were forced to play a 3-game playoff which they won.

Fighting for the pennant with one of their key players sidelined with an ankle injury, the Royals lost two tough games and their opportunity to take the pennant.

Leading batters for the team were John Johnson, with .595 and Vin Rooney with .509. Dan Shantz led in RBI’s with 53 and Carl Wehmann had 33. Shantz was also the team’s leading slugger with 9 homers. Jerry Lambiotte with a 15-9 pitching record, backed up by the relief pitching of Pete Lazaras with a 5-2 and John Swanson’s with a 4-0 record, helped lead the team to a victorious season.

The Synthetic Cardinals finished the season with a 20-12 record taking second place. Pete LaCharity led the team in batting with .535, followed by John Stamm’s .525 and Charlie Roland with .514. Eric Johnson was the team’s slugger with 12 home-runs. Howard Slason coached the team which consisted of Jim Shea, Joe Wojtczak, Bill Broden, Bill Stinson, Keith Hughes, Fernando Henriques, Vic Kloc, Howard Nixon and John Prior.

Employee Benefits Hit $10,826,594

In the first six months of 1969, Uniroyal paid 58,465 claims, totaling $6,218,000 for hospital-surgical bills of Uniroyal employees.

As of March 31, 1969, the Company paid out $4,608,594 in group life, accidental death and dismemberment insurance which covers most employees and retirees in the United States.

The total of these benefits amounted to the staggering sum of $10,826,594.

New Union President

Leon Raskauskas recently became President of Local 308, United Rubber Workers which represents the Synthetic plant. Leon replaces Joe Arbachauskas who resigned as president for reason of health. Before his new appointment, Leon had been Vice-President and had served

as President of the Local from 1959 to 1961.

Blancato Improving

Sam Blancato who was recently burned in a plant accident is well on the road to recovery at the Waterbury Hospital. Sam and his family express their sincere thanks to the many employees who sent him cards, letters and gifts. It’s times like this, Sam pointed out, that you measure your real wealth by the many friends you have.

Anxious to return to work soon, Sam will be in the hospital a short time more for skin grafts. Meanwhile, he looks forward to receiving letters from his many friends in the plant.


Judo Brown Belt Held by Denise Pratt

Denise Pratt, an R & D Analyst, is the proud owner of the Brown Belt. She plans to obtain the Black Belt, a unique distinction in Judo for a woman. Denise has become so expert in Judo that she now teaches a beginner’s course at the Y.W.C.A. in Waterbury.

Judo, the “gentle way”, is an art practiced as a sport, based on the ancient methods of barehanded fighting. It’s a form of wrestling, requiring a special uniform to practice in and may be engaged in by both young and old, male and female.

Judo, which should not be confused with Karate, has a fourfold purpose: 1) physical development; 2) proficiency in a contest; 3) mental development; and 4) the use of minimum effort for maximum efficiency.

A knowledge of Japanese words such as Ukemi, Kata, Uchikomi, Pandori, Hidari

Shizentai is also required in learning the art of Judo. Use of the wrong words may result in an unexpected flip over the shoulder, and a sudden fall on the ground.

600 Deaths Over Labor Day Weekend

Safety seems ignored over the three-day weekends of national holidays. The July 4th weekend caused more than 600 deaths on the highways. Predictions for the long Labor Day weekend estimate another 600 deaths will occur on the highways, by drownings and other types of accidents.

Take safety awareness with you when you travel. Your life, your family’s life and the lives of others are in your hands. By driving defensively – expecting that the other driver will do something wrong – by wearing safety belts; by not following too closely in case of an unexpected stop by the car in front; by not speeding (it may mean a stiff fine and loss of license); and by checking your car and tires carefully, an accident will be less likely to happen to you and your family.

Watch your young children, especially when swimming, boating or fishing. Their curious minds and tendency to stray can cause you many anxious moments and spoil your holiday.

Your safety is in your hands and by expecting the unexpected happening during the Labor Day weekend, you can avoid an accident that may mean serious injury to you and your family.

This fatal accident wiped out an entire family: the mother, father and three small children. Your life, your family’s, and the lives of other people depend upon your safe driving on the highway.

New “Idea Plan” Offers $1000 Cash Awards

For many years, Uniroyal Chemical has operated a Suggestion System for employees to submit original ideas and receive cash awards for them.

To encourage employees to participate more fully in the plan, and to reward them more for their originality and experience, Uniroyal has initiated a new “Idea Plan.”

The Company has raised the minimum award from $15 to $25 and the maximum at the local plant level to $1,000. If an idea is worth more, it will be submitted to a management committee for consideration for an additional award.

The new Plan will cut out the red tape and eliminate the long delays before a suggestion is acted upon. Employees will be informed as quickly as possible whether or not their ideas have been accepted or rejected.

For effective and immediate handling of submitted ideas, Larry Koth, Industrial Engineering Manager, has been designated the plant’s Idea Plan Administrator. Each department will have an idea coordinator.

Department coordinators selected so far are: Lou Coscia, Research and Development; Larry Mambrino, Control; Pat Petti, Purchasing; Sam Gillette, Chemical Production; Milt Makoski, Industrial Relations; Ernst Krauss, Engineering; Bill Albaitis, Materials.

Employees will be kept fully informed on the details of the new Plan as it is implemented. Now’s the time to start thinking and jot down your ideas on work methods, equipment or supplies, customer service, product quality, new products, safety, waste reduction, production increase, shipping, packaging and many others.

The new Uniroyal Idea Plan provides every employee the opportunity to increase his earnings, simply by jotting down and submitting the hundreds of ideas in his head. $1,000 . . . and even more is worth a try.

830,000 Hours; No Accidents

The plant almost reached the magic 1,000,000 manhours worked without a losttime accident. During July and August, no lost-time accidents occurred.

However, on September 6, after reaching 830,084 manhours, an employee slipped from a ladder and fell backwards into a ditch, fracturing his forearm.

As of August 31 there were 3 less lost-time accidents for the same period in 1968, a slight improvement. There was a decrease of 16 serious injuries for the same period.

Whether at work, home, or on the road, safety is your personal responsibility. Your unsafe act may result in a serious injury to a fellow employee.

The irony of safety is that the person responsible for the accident, often escapes injury.

As the paper went to press another lost time accident was reported on September 11, when a driver stopped to give a ride to an employee walking to work. The station wagon was hit in the rear and the driver suffered from a whiplash, loosing several days of work.


Housekeeping Prevents Fires

The week with October 9 in it – the day of the Great Chicago Fire – has been set aside as Fire Prevention Week to focus attention on the tragic loss of lives and families from fire. Starting October 6, the plant will hold a weeklong series of fire drills, tours and demonstrations on the proper action to take in case of a plant fire and the safety measures to prevent them.

A major cause of fire in the plant is poor housekeeping and only the alertness of safety-minded employees and the quick response of the fire department to alarms has prevented serious damage.

Good housekeeping in your area makes it safer to work in and certainly more enjoyable, as well as a major contribution in fire prevention.

Fire Prevention in our plant is a 52 week a year operation and we feel sure that employees realize this and make it a year-round practice.

Noticeable to the retirees were the many improvements to the plant during the past few years: the new front entrance, the modernization of the Reclaim plant, the new Control Center and other building improvements.

Several commented on the courtesy of the Foremen and Supervisors who conducted the tours and the plant drivers who provided rides.

Fred Wintsch and Milt Makoski were in charge of the program. Molly Cobbol and Marion Hutt served as receptionists.

Technical Team Wins Bowling League

The Uniroyal Chemical Handicap Bowling League ended its season with the Technical team, first half winner, defeating the Atatics, second half winner, in the roll-off to take first place.

Eight teams, registered with the National Duckpin Bowling Congress, made up the league: Engineering, Atatics, Technical, Synthetic, EMIC, Process Development, Distribution/Scheduling and

Pilot Plant. The teams bowled 36 games during the season on Wednesday nights, and finished the season with a banquet at Lift-The-Latch Inn on Saturday, May 24, at which prizes and trophies were awarded, to which the Chemical plant makes a donation. A National Bowling Congress “Big 40 Club” went to Karen DiDominzio and a “Big 50 Club” to Dom Pape.

Unions Set Picnic Dates

Local 308 will hold a picnic for members on Sunday, July 13, at Schildgen’s Grove in Union City from 11:00 A.M. to 7:30 P.M. Chairman of the picnic is Art Calder, with Manny Matos, Jessie Silva and Ben Tomaszeski serving on the committee. Joe Arbachauskas, Local president, and Calder promise that plenty of excellent food and refreshments will be available for an enjoyable day.

Local 218’s picnic is set for Saturday, August 2, at Holiday Hill in Prospect from

11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Union members and their families including children up to 18 years of age are invited. Joe Rzeszutek, Local president, pointed out that retired members are invited to the affair. Chairman Roger Lestage and his committee are preparing a gourmet’s dinner of roast beef and chicken to be served at 4:00 P.M.

Swimming, games and plenty of food and cooling refreshments are included to make it a pleasant day for members and their families.


Canaries Check Unsafe Conditions

For 20 years, canaries have tested enclosed vessels and tanks for oxygen supply and harmful vapors. The four canaries kept at the Synthetic plant have been used by the tank cleaners to assure that a sufficient oxygen supply is in the tanks and that no explosive mixtures exist before they clean them.

Today, the fire inspectors use an oxygen meter and vapor meter to check unsafe conditions, but the canaries are still kept as an extra safety precaution.

DEAR FELLOW EMPLOYEE:

All of us are aware of the importance of producing quality products in an efficient and safe manner. We are also aware of the importance of providing service to our customers, for only through the sale of the results of our effort can we be paid for this effort. I am convinced that each of us tries to do his job in the best way.

But how do we see our jobs? Is our particular job over, when we feel that somebody other than ourselves can be blamed for poor performance?

For example, is it justifiable to blame our injury on someone else if, indeed, it was an unsafe act on our part? Or, is it reasonable to blame lost production on the shortage of raw materials if we didn’t do something about it? Maybe we are all too quick to place the blame on someone else, before we accept all of our own responsibilities.

Together, we operate a very complex operation where each employee bears a great deal of responsibility for his personal efforts, and if we are fully successful a great deal of responsibility for the efforts of others.

Flood, Disaster Plan Revised

The Naugatuck River became the “mad river” in August 1955 and flooded the plant. Having a plan for action got the plant back into operation in two days.

The purpose of the revised Plan, which has been distributed to involved employees, is to minimize delay and confusion if an unusual or serious incident occurs, such as the August flood of 1955, and to delegate responsibilities to assigned personnel.

If an emergency occurs, the Control Center for operations will be set up in the Industrial Relations office, Bldg. 84, unless circumstances require another location. The Plan outlines the utilization of all equipment in the plant and the specific duties to be carried out by authorized personnel. It also delegates to Ron Mitchinson, Fred Wintsch, Bob Krause, and Bill Lavelle the responsibility and authority, as the plant’s public information representatives, to provide information to the press. All employees should refer requests on information of the emergency to the plant’s public information representatives to prevent damaging rumors and in-

Explorers Offer Students Career Insight

The Explorers offer high school boys, 14 to 18 years old, the opportunity to see and learn about careers in science, chemistry, and industry. The group, sponsored by the Chemical plant, was the first Explorer Post in Uniroyal.

The Explorers conduct laboratory experiments in the plant’s laboratory facilities; take tours of industrial plants in the area to see first hand the manufacturing operation of a large company; and make weekend trips to universities, military installations and other places of interest to high school students. By exploring or seeing scientific operations; observing chemistry in action; and studying the engineering complexity of a synthetic rubber plant, a high school student obtains an actual insight into the type of career to pursue in life.

This year the group visited Scovill’s, Mallory Battery, Sikorsky Aircraft, Uniroyal Chemical’s Agricultural Research Center, the E.M.I.C. Computer Center, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

If your son is interested in a career in science, chemistry or industry, and would like to join the Explorers, Bob Smith, Ext. 674, will be glad to give you more details on the group’s activities.

Safety Shows Small Improvement Over ’68

The plant’s safety record for the first four months of 1969 shows that 7 lost time accidents and 14 serious injuries took place. Although a slight improvement over 1968, the record indicates that a greater safety awareness by every employee is required to make the plant a safer place to work.

By not taking chances; by stopping unsafe acts; accidents can be prevented and the plant made safer for work. In 1968 we worked 1,000,000 manhours without a lost time accident. With every employee’s effort, we can reach 1,000,000 manhours again . . . and even 2,000,000!

Dividend Declared

Uniroyal declared a dividend of 17½ cents a share on the common stock. A $2 dividend on the 8% first preferred stock was also announced. Both are payable June 25 to stockholders of record May 26.


Dr. Williams Leaves

Dr. Edward E. Williams will leave us as plant physician at the end of May.

Dr. John P. Elser will assume the duties of plant physician on June 1.

Dr. Williams has been associated with the Chemical plant for the past 35 years. He plans to continue his private practice in Naugatuck.

“That’s The Way We Always Did It”

Have you ever asked why something was done in a certain way, only to be told, “Because that’s the way we always did it”?

Perhaps the classic example of this kind of senseless and stubborn adherence to precedent occurred when Bismark was ambassador to the court of Alexander II. Looking out a window of the Peterhof Palace, in 1860, Bismark noticed a sentry standing watch in the middle of the lawn and idly asked the Czar why the man was there. The Czar asked an aid-decamp. He didn’t know. The general commanding the troops at the palace was summoned. He didn’t know either.

“Then find out why and report to me,” commanded the Czar.

It took three days of intensive investigation, but finally the general came back with the answer.

It seemed that in 1780, on a fine spring morning, Catherine the Great had looked out the window and had seen the first flower thrusting above the frozen grass. She had ordered a sentry posted there to prevent anyone from picking the flower or inadvertently stepping on it. And eighty years later, the sentry was still there. No one had ever asked that simple, one-word question: “Why?

Safety Glasses Replaced Free, But Not Your Eyesight

Kevin Kelley of the Research and Development department, while performing development work in Bldg. 61 laboratory, had a close call when the unexpected happened.

Kevin was using a regular gallon jug in a dry ice and acetone bath to make a 50 percent caustic solution. The temperature differential caused the jug to burst and the contents spilled onto the dry ice and covered the upper portion of his body and his eyes. Fortunately, he was wearing his safety glasses and prevented serious injury to his eyesight.

By being safe at work and wearing the proper protective equipment for the job, serious accidents are avoided. Your unsafe act may not hurt you, but it could seriously injure one of your fellow employees.

How You Can Obtain A Pair Of Safety Prescription Glasses

Fred Mayo of the Process Development Lab. selects frames for safety prescription glasses from Adeline Farrar R.N., Chemical Hospital nurse.

The Naugatuck plant has a program which is operated by the Safety Department to enable all Chemical division employees to obtain prescription safety glasses at no cost to the employee, except for the examination and fitting fee.

The procedure is simple. An employee may go to either the Chemical or Synthetic hospital and obtain a prescription safety glass form from the nurse. He takes the form to his own eye doctor and has an examination. The employee pays for the cost of the examination and returns the completed form to the plant nurse. At this time he may also select the frame he prefers from samples in the hospital. The Company then sends the prescription to the Wilkie Optical Company and purchases the glasses.

Effective January 1, 1969, all prescription glasses will be returned to the doctor or optician of your choice for proper checking and fitting. In some cases an additional fitting charge may be made, depending upon the agreement you have made.

Here are other facts you should know: 1. You may buy an extra pair of glasses for yourself, if you wish and take advantage of our Company discount, provided the prescription is less than one year old. 2. You may also purchase prescription sun glasses at the same discount. 3. You may obtain a free pair of glasses whenever you require a new prescription. 4. Lenses or frames damaged as the result of an accident in the plant are replaced free of charge.

Employees Contribute $20,646. Top United Givers Goal By 103%

Ron Mitchinson, Chairman of the United Givers Campaign at the Naugatuck plant announced the results of the Chemical Plant’s drive. Employees contributed $20,646 or 103%, topping the plant’s Goal of $20,000. This surpasses by almost $3,000 the previous high of $17,737 contributed by employees to the 1967 United Givers Drive. The success of this year’s campaign can be attributed to the enthusiastic efforts of the Campagin Committee, the ninety-five Co-Captains, and the generous support of the Chemical division employees.


Accidents Continue At High Rate

In the ten months of this year, 79 lost time and serious injuries have occurred. Most of these resulted from a careless act or operation. We each must accept responsibility for our own actions and the safety of all.

New Food Vendors Service Plant

By Monday, December 2nd, all food and beverage vending machines in the plant will have been replaced with brand new machines to provide plant employees with better food service.

The new firm, Indiana Vendors, has proposed several basic changes which will eliminate the problems we have experienced in recent months; machines out of order, empty or not giving the proper change, and food often neither fresh nor of uniform high quality. There will be an on-site maintenance man who will be in charge of keeping all machines operating properly in all respects. All food will be prepared and wrapped in the Synthetic Plant kitchen facilities. This means that food in the machines will have been prepared an hour or two before being put into the vending equipment. It also means that when more departments than usual are scheduled to run over a weekend or holiday, extra sandwiches can be prepared at the last minute and placed in the machine. If a machine runs out at 2:00 P.M., it can be filled again before the next day.

The machines will be the latest in design and efficiency. Take the office machines for example. You put your coin into the machine, select the way you want your coffee, and receive a cup of fresh, perked coffee. The machines operate on 1/3 lb. cans of Maxwell House coffee — exactly the same grind you buy for home use. Approximately 20 cups are perked and then transferred to a holding chamber. After a preset length of time, a new batch is perked and any coffee remaining in the hold chamber is dumped. The coffee you buy is always fresh. No more instant coffee.

The food machines will also hold a wider variety of food. Soup will be sold with the can, bowl, spoon, crackers and napkin as a package — you’ll never run into the situation where, having purchased a can of soup, no spoon or dishes are available.

Some of the areas in the plant will be expanded or have more versatile machines such as canned soda or a flavor ice vending machine — the vending area in Reclaim Bldg. #1 will have a sandwich machine, for example, and a coffee machine will be put into the Chemical Machine Shop, where up to now only a cigarette machine has been in operation.

In short, new and better machines, with better service and more and better food, to give us the best food service arrangement possible.

Quality products play an extremely important role in the agricultural business. A poor quality product damages a grower’s crop, the reputation of the product and the Company. Important also in the farm market is good packaging. It either helps or reduces our sales. Dented or stained cans, torn and dirty bags convey the impression of poor quality and workmanship in the customer’s mind. Good quality and good packaging can help make 1969 a big year in Alanap and Dyanap sales.
